CALL FOR ENTRIES RPS Members' Monthly Competition: Your chance to feature on the 2018 membership card

Enter your images to our monthly member’s competition for the chance to have your image featured on the RPS membership card in 2018. The winning image will feature on the membership card that goes out to all our 11,600-plus members. You can enter up to 5 images of your choice however uploaded images need to be 300dpi at 1020 x 630 pixels. The competition is free to enter and open until 30 September. If you are a new member and would like to enter, simply register on the competition website to create an account. Register and upload your entries here   Here’s what last year’s winner, Andy Ferrington, had to say about having his image featured on last year's card: "I entered the RPS membership card competition last year as a reasonably new member, and was delighted to be short-listed let alone win! I had a few images that sprung to mind for such a competition, and being honest the chosen image wasn't the same image I had personal hopes for. "All Aboard" was an all time favourite of mine from travelling around India some years ago. Looking at it always reminds me of all those emotions that travelling conjures, and my eyes always drift to the boys smile. It was an honour to have this image chosen by the RPS, and especially for it to be displayed on its membership card. MEMBER OFFER Insurance for home and photographic equipment New Home Insurance Policy including worldwide accidental damage cover for photographic equipment    We are pleased to announce the launch of a new home Insurance designed to meet the needs of our UK members, in association with insurance broker AIM Risk Services.    The scheme provides tailored covers at no additional cost for RPS members, with benefits which include: Cover for photographic equipment under the general contents section of the policy – sums insured are unlimited with no need to specify individual items. Automatically extends to include accidental damage cover for items whilst they are temporarily taken anywhere in the world - there is no need to notify insurers No onerous cover endorsements - for example losses from unattended motor vehicles or theft where force or violence has not been used are not excluded. The scheme has been designed for amateur photographers, but will extend to cover members who do a small amount of commercial work earning less than £10,000 from photography per year (there are restrictions on the value of equipment used for commercial purposes).    Minimum sums insured for the scheme are Buildings £300,000 and contents £75,000 (total including photographic equipment)    For more information email AIM Risk Services here or call 0800 193 7742. The RPS Journal Back copies sought Although the RPS Journal has been digitised from 1853 the Society is looking to build up a complete run of the printed issues of the Journal. Through the generosity of several members and some judicious purchases on eBay we now have a complete run back to 1965. If you have any complete years of the Journal from 1964 back to 1853 that you would like to pass on to the Society please contact Michael Pritchard on 01225 325730 or e: michael@rps.org

EXHIBITION OPENING Documentary Photographer of the Year 26 October-8 November

The entries have been judged and the winners informed. The winning images will be printed and exhibited by the Printspace. All other entries will be screened during the evening. The Committee of the Documentary Group would like to invite all RPS members to join us and the judges at the Printspace for the prize giving and the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, 26 October at 19.30pm.  As numbers are limited please book your place using the link here. EXHIBITION Illuminating Cambridge Libraries

Member Sara Rawlinson's photographic study of libraries throughout Cambridge honours features that enable the dissemination and preservation of knowledge by highlighting the aesthetic environment in which such books and documents are displayed and preserved. On display at Michaelhouse, Trinity Street, Cambridge, CB2 1SU from 2-14 October (09:00-17:00). Opening Night reception on Monday 2 October 18:30-20:30 please RSVP here). The Society of Light and Lighting has announced that the third Night of Heritage Light (NOHL) will be taking place in Oxford on 29 September 2017. Designed to showcase the talents of SLL members and the lighting community, teams of lighting designers will be lighting six of the most famous historical buildings in Oxford. RPS members are invited to record this unique occasion. Find out more here.

LECTURE Professor Caroline Wilkinson

This year's Combined Royal Colleges lecture will describe how clinical images contribute towards the depiction of faces from the past and from contemporary forensic investigation and discuss the challenges and limitations of this research. You will discover the application of clinical imagery to the depiction of famous historical figures (such as Richard III and Robert the Bruce), preserved bodies (such as Ancient Egyptian mummies or bog bodies) and disease or trauma in ancient populations.   More information and tickets are available here.               Image: By kind permission of Face Lab at LJMU.

WORKSHOP Landscape and Weather

Photographing Landscape; whatever the weather with Tony Worobiec Lynmouth Somerset,  1 October This new venue offers an opportunity to visit the beautiful town of Lynmouth in rural Somerset. The purpose of this course is to alert you to the potential of photographing landscape, irrespective of the weather conditions. While we are all quite comfortable shooting in more benign weather conditions, we should also be aware of the excellent opportunities offered by the English weather.  And there is no better place to put your new found skills into practice than the stunning countryside in the surrounding area.  Find out more here.

EXHIBITION Nature Group Members' Exhibition The exhibition of prints and projected images opens on Saturday, 30 September at Wingfield Barns, Church Road, Wingfield, Suffolk IP21 5RA and runs until Sunday, 15 October. The galleries are open Wednesdays to Sundays from 11.00am to 4.00pm and admission is free.  See more here.       This will be the first time that the Members’ Exhibition of Prints and Projected Images will have been shown to the public, which is very exciting.
