Chichester Camera Club Exhibition 16/17th Jan

Members of your Club are cordially invited to Chichester Camera Club’s fifteenth advanced members’ exhibition to be held on Saturday, 16th January 2016 at the North Mundham Village Hall. The exhibition will be open between 10 am and 5 pm with refreshments, light lunches and teas available throughout the day. If anyone cannot make it on the Saturday, we will be open on the following day (Sunday) between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. We will also have refreshments available on that day.

Print exhibitors have had the choice of varying screen spaces with the freedom to display virtually any type of work they wish with no rules on size, subject matter technique, etc. whilst PDI workers are each allowed to have up to 4 images projected, again with no subject ruling. Based on our previous, similar exhibitions, this freedom of choice has resulted in a considerable display of artistic talent. The day has also proved to be a great social occasion.

We hope you will be able to visit us and look forward to meeting you on the 16th January. See our web site at http://chichestercameraclub.org.uk/

Kodak Downton connection

Following on from last nights talk by Ian Platt FRPS etc. I mentioned that the Eastman family came from Downton. After some time I tracked down the family eight generations back and got the link. See below.
The Eastman family was in Charlton {spelled Charelton above}, "Dounton Manor" as early as 1539. It is in these tumultuous times we begin the tracing of the Eastman name.*

Photography help for a charity

I write to request some help from Salisbury Camera Club.

South Wilts Mencap is a local charity serving Salisbury and South Wiltshire. Our members, people with a learning disability their parents and carers, lead challenging lives and we offer a support, companionship and recreation.

Our website is elderly and tired, so we are redeveloping it with the help of a professional public relations consultant and a commercial web designer who are generously giving their time pro bono. We have completed the brief and are about to embark on the design and development phase of what will be a small but high quality site. You will understand that it is an important tool for communicating with members, attracting volunteers and raising funds.

We shall need some good quality photographs, but have neither the necessary skills nor sufficient funds to pay a professional photographer. I wondered therefore if one of your members, perhaps someone who has retired, might be interested in taking on a project to populate the site with good photographs. We are very vibrant Society and there are lots of different and interesting events taking place all the time. Our members are very friendly and I believe the project would prove enjoyable and highly satisfying.

If you could put me in touch with anyone who might be interested, I would be most grateful.

Thank you for taking the time to read this email, I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,
Nigel Afford

South East Region ARPS Advisory Day: Pictorial, Natural History and Travel

2 August 2015  10:30 - 16:30
Canterbury, Kent

The event is intended to provide guidance to RPS Members and Non-members who are considering applying for the ARPS distinction and will offer an opportunity to see successful ARPS submissions and receive personal guidance on the preparation of your panel together with the selection of a subject.

The Advisors will be Paul Foley FRPS and Roger Hance FRPS AFIAP BPES. The event will be most suited to those considering applying for the ARPS distinction in pictorial, natural history or travel. The category of visual art has been divided into pictorial and creative. If you are considering seeking advice on pictorial, it is recommended that you refer to the definition on the RPS website.

You may attend as a Spectator or as a Participant. As a Participant, you should take to the meeting 20 prints that you consider could form the basis for a panel. This will enable the Advisors to comment on the quality of your work and examine how the prints may work together as a coherent panel.

Those wishing to attend are asked to register and pay through the RPS website. In the event that there are any problems with this process, please contact the Regional Organiser.

Freedom of Photography is saved!

10 July 2015
Your voices have been heard by the European Parliament and by the European Commission! After handing over the half a million signatures on Wednesday, the parliament voted yesterday with a big majority against any restriction of the Freedom of Panorama!

When I handed over the petition to MEP Julia Reda, she was “overwhelmed by the responses to the petition” and stated that “the petition has changed the debate in the parliament considerably and a lot of the parliamentary groups that originally voted for a restriction of Freedom of Panorama are clearly changing their mind about this.”

And the debate changed indeed – even MEP Jean-Marie Cavada, who started everything with his proposal of restricting the Freedom of Panorama in the first place, called upon the other members of the Parliament to vote against his own amendment. Many politicians brought the Freedom of Panorama up in the debate and mentioned that they’ve received “hundreds of e-mails and letters” from concerned people – from you!

Also the European Commission gave a clear statement by Commissioner Günther Oettinger that they “don’t intend to restrict the Freedom of Panorama”. Instead he says that “what you can see with your eyes as a citizen, on public places and streets in Europe, you should be allowed to also photograph it with a camera.

The primary goal is accomplished. The parliament voted under applause that the existing Freedom of Panorama is not taken away from anybody and we can all take a deep breath. However, we do not forget about photographers from France, Italy and other countries that currently don’t enjoy this Freedom. We hope that the European Commission understood that this essential freedom has to apply all over Europe and we will closely monitor the proposal for the copyright reform by the European Commission that is due by the end of the year.

Sunday 5 July 2015

Save the Freedom of Photography

Please read the message from our President, Tony Oliver, about a petition to the European Parliament concerning the freedom to photograph in public places.
Thanks,
Sue Teagle
SCPF Secretary

Given the short time from before the vote ( 4 days) I suggest that the best course of action would be for us to sign as individuals (if we wish to) and to send the link to club secretaries. Although we would no usually get involved directly with political canvassing, I think that this issue is one of potential importance to us as club photographers.
I was aware of the proposal, although the potential interpretations as I understand them are not quite as severe as the petition suggests (and relate more to commercial use of images than amateur photographers). However this is still an extremely important issue which has passed most of us by.

Security Advice – scam email alert

A warning has been issued regarding opening emails from unknown or unsolicited sources.

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) has identified scam emails claiming to be from the Royal Mail which are tricking victims into downloading CryptoLocker ‘ransomware’.

Two emails have been identified, they both claim that Royal Mail are holding an item for you at your local sorting office and that a response to the email is required to arrange for the item to be resent/collected.

According to the Royal Mail and NFIB the emails appear to be coming from:

RoyalMailParcelpacketinfo@championmailservice.com

or ‘yourparcel@championmail.com’

Once installed CryptoLocker works by encrypting the victim’s personal files such as, photos, music, office documents and then demands a payment.

Consideration should be given when opening emails.

Further information can be found on the Action Fraud website or at the Royal Mail website.

The RPS and The Open University launch new online photography course

Well worth checking out if you wish to get an LRPS.

The Royal Photographic Society and The Open University have launched a unique online digital photography course that will bring together The RPS’s 160-year experience in photography and the Open University’s recognised expertise in delivering education online.

Digital Photography: Creating and Sharing Better Images is a 10-week course designed to help people new to digital photography and those looking to improve existing skills – and to see the world in a new way. It will develop participants’ technical and visual skills through weekly practical assignments. Students will join a vibrant online community of their peers, to share, comment and learn from each other’s work, and they will receive feedback from expert photographers on their final assessment.

The course has been designed to give those completing it the skills needed to tackle The Royal Photographic Society’s Licentiate (LRPS) distinction in photography.

The 10-week course will cost £200 with participants working through The Open University’s award-winning online platform. There will be two presentations each year, with the first in June and October 2015. Students who successfully complete the course will be entitled to an RPS Certificate in Photography. It does not provide credit towards OU qualifications.

Inspiring seminars at the Spring Shoot

Our interactive photography show, the Spring Shoot returns for 2015 on Tuesday 19th May. There will be live studio action with Pentax and their mighty 645Z, Falconry displays from Liberty's Owl and Raptor centre, Macro photography from Wildarena with their beautiful butterflies and much more.

We are excited to announce our guest speaker line up which this year is superb. Book your places now to avoid disappointment!

From Sony we have a FREE seminar with Nick Webster, internationally renowned Fashion and Editorial photographer. He will share his insight into the world of fashion and how he uses the Sony Alpha system within it.

In another FREE seminar from Canon we welcome David Newton, expert photographer and tutor, David will talk about his love of Landscapes and how Canon cameras help him share his vision.

Heading up the bill we are thrilled to announce we have not one, but two different seminars from the creative colossus that is Damien Lovegrove.

Damien is a renowned photographer and lighting guru. He specialises in portrait and beauty photography and teaches professional photographers his craft across the world.

In the morning session Damien will show you how to take full remote control of the off-camera Cactus speedlight system that he uses with the Fuji X system to create his magical portraits.

He will start with wonderfully simple one-light setups to create portraits with his trademark cinematic feel.

In the second of his demonstrations Damien will show you how to recreate the enigmatic charm of a bygone era with Hollywood portraits.

I'm sure you'll agree this year's show looks like it will be our best yet. Tuesday 19th May, 10am, Hamworthy Club, Canford Magna. Don't miss it!
