PAGB News No.181 and 181 Extra

Click HERE to read the latest news.
Note two things particularly 1)  Irene Froy talk [Irene was mentioned by John Tilsley for her technique of inserting a white layer] and 1) the announcement of the death of Maureen Albright a fairly local [Aldborne] AV Expert. We knew her quite well.

Click HERE to read the Extra Part all about our good friend Tim Rudman [as mentioned by John Tilsley last Monday specifically when John talked about Lith Printing].
Tim's book about Iceland shows many Lith Prints and some are shown in the 181 Extra. Go see.

Viewfinders Competition with Prizes

Viewfinders is holding a photography competition this year as part of the Romsey Festival 2017 and in association with the Romsey Advertiser.

Our objective is to encourage adults and under 18s to take their first steps into more organised photography. In other words potential new members and potential young photography club members of the future. There is, however, nothing to prevent existing members from entering and they would be very welcome to do so.
What I would ask though, please, is that you could encourage your members to talk to members of their family: children, grandchildren and friends and encourage them to enter. There are many who will find the prizes attractive if we can just reach them.

Thanks also to the Salisbury Branch of London Camera Exchange, who donated the prizes. The winning photographs will go on display at the museum soon. Salisbury History project - HELP needed

We need your help to shape our new history website – please can you take 5 minutes to complete our survey

Click link
https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/3YK93FN

Background : Salisbury District Hospital’s ArtCare team has been awarded a £40,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to record and improve access to its collection of historical archives, memorabilia and medical equipment, through exhibitions, workshops, talks and permanent displays. The collection includes photographs, video, artwork and medical objects that give a distinctive view of Salisbury and the way healthcare has developed from 1700 to the present day.

The second phase of this project is to create a website to share these collection items with the public. ArtCare need your help, to shape the way the website looks and let us know what aspects of these interesting and unique stories you would like to be told.
This survey will be open until 31st March 2017.

Much appreciated,

Lesley Meaker

Re: Film and Photography Exhibition

Name: Will Todd

Email Address: wjtodd21@gmail.com

Subject: Film and Photography Exhibition

Message: Hi,

I’m a Film student at Wiltshire College in Salisbury, and am organising a screening in Salisbury to showcase our work to try and get feedback on it. Myself and a group of 6 others would love for you to join us in watching our work and critiquing it in a creative environment. We also welcome your own work that you’d be willing to show, we think this would be a unique chance to show your work to and meet other people who share similar interests as you. We are still finalising the location, but we plan to hold it on Wednesday the 22nd of March and it will be early evening time. Please let me if this is of interest to you, and I will pass on the details as soon as they are confirmed!

Thanks,
Will

Blandford Camera Club Exhibition

I am e-mailing this advice to all Clubs in our area to inform you that we are arranging our annual exhibition for 27th and 28th May and would like to invite as many of your Members as possible to enter the Open section.
Rather than use the expensive Post, we are going digital so all details and application forms are easily downloadable from our Website – www.bfcclub.co.uk - look under sub-heading Exhibition. I should be grateful if you would let all your Members know about it and to make things easier for you I am attaching mini-posters to hand out to those interested – there are two to each A4 page and I have included our website address so it won’t be forgotten. Thank you in advance for your help with this – we look forward to lots of entries and a good couple of days.

CAMERA STRAPS

Below are sources of the kit Marina shared. It is certainly well thought out and not as bulky as the Optech clip system of attachments.
See what you think.

‘The English’ by Ian Berry and Ash Mills Thursday 9 March at 1.00pm-3.00pm.

THE ENGLISH

The Beaumont Gallery in Mere, Wiltshire is hosting a talk and slideshow on its current photography exhibition ‘The English’ by the two exhibiting photographers Ian Berry and Ash Mills on Thursday 9 March at 1.00pm-3.00pm.
This is a rare and great opportunity to talk face-to-face with two professional photographers, one of whom is a world-renowned Magnum photographer.
Hear them talk about the challenges of capturing ‘the story’ through their photography and the techniques they use.
Let them inspire you and further expand your creative horizons. And there will be plenty of opportunity to question them about all aspects of their work.
Tickets, £10.00 per person. Please email info@beaumontgallery.co.uk or call 07855
650964 to reserve your place. Numbers limited.

Short biographies for the two photographers

Ian Berry made his reputation as a photojournalist reporting from South Africa, where he worked for the Daily Mail and later Drum magazine. He was the only photographer to document the massacre at Sharpeville. While based in Paris he was invited to join Magnum by Henri Cartier-Bresson. He moved to London to become the first contract photographer for the Observer Magazine. He has covered conflict in Israel, Ireland, Vietnam, Czechoslovakia and Congo, famine in Ethiopia and apartheid in South Africa. He has also reported on the political and social transformations in China and the former USSR.

Awards include Nikon Photographer of the Year (twice), Picture of the Year award from the National Press Photographers of America, and British Press Magazine Photographer of the Year (twice). Arts Council Award, Art Directors’ Club of New York Award.
His books include The English, two books on South Africa, Sold into slavery and Sea. Exhibitions in London, Paris, Hamburg, Brussels, Bradford, Perpignan, Aix en Provence Shanghai, Lowry Gallery, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, Edinburgh, SCOP Shanghai, Hastings, Bruges.

The book: The English - Ian Berry This collection of Ian Berry's superb photographs of "The English" represent a personal exploration of England and English life - a project he could undertake through being awarded the first Arts Council Photography Bursary. Says Berry of this book, "Though I was born and grew up in the North of England, I was in the odd situation of being English and knowing very little about England, having spent much of my life abroad.
I set out to record what I saw professionally. But despite a journalistic purpose I am drawn to visual situations. Many areas of life are difficult of access to a photographer. I have had to select my favourite photographs and that must militate against a comprehensive view. In the end, such a book can only offer a personal and partial view of what one has seen. Readers must draw their own conclusions about the photographs and what they add up to." Ian Berry's photographs of old and young, of all classes, at home, at work, at leisure, together and alone, will inform, sadden, delight, and illuminate England and the English way of life.

Ash Mills graduated from Salisbury College of Art in 1994, with a PQE in Photography, Film and Television. Working in the camera department he was fortunate to work on fascinating documentaries such as the BBC’s QED series and Living Proof as well as exciting programmes like Earth Story, 999 reconstructions, Channel 4’s Time Team, and various Extreme programmess as he was keen on caving and generally getting roasted, soaked or blown away! With a client base established in Bristol and London he moved back to Salisbury where he has gradually transitioned into doing more stills work than film, along with a spell as a film editor for a local film production company. Nowadays he has a broad portfolio of clients aside from Salisbury Cathedral. He still credits his grandmother Tineke Robson, a Dutch artist, for inspiring his more creative side and introducing him to a lifelong love of photography and art. He had the huge pleasure of working alongside Ian Berry at Salisbury Cathedral whilst he took photos over Easter in 2015; “I remain in awe of Ian’s style and hope to continue to learn as much as I can from him.”
