Obituary for Ivor Smith
Ivor was a member of Salisbury and Ringwood Camera clubs for many years. In Salisbury he wins his first Trophy in 1983 and his last in 2008/9. You can see all this information and every other Trophy winner in Salisbury CC from 1954 HERE
Below we reproduce 11 of his photographs by kind permission of his daughter Linda. Please click on an image to see a larger version.
Ivor used to run a repair garage in the village of Broad Chalke. He had a collection of prints he made of the village. I believe he found the glass negatives in the village. He gave copies to the church.
Below we reproduce 11 of his photographs by kind permission of his daughter Linda. Please click on an image to see a larger version.

Our Millennium Project now safe
Today I donated the Project that the Camera Club made in 1999 for the new Millennium to Salisbury Museum.
Jeremy and Sheila helped me load the 130 panels into my car and later we had fun unloading them into the Museum with the help of Adrian Green the Museum Director.
He said he was very pleased to accept them and has various plans in mind to use them such as covering from floor to ceiling a corridor in the Museum. I will let you know when and if this happens.
Meanwhile below are copies of the paperwork. This has a unique number that will allow us to see the items if we should wish to do so. Click on the images to enlarge them.
Perhaps now is the time to do a repeat for 2020 twenty years on to see the changes in Salisbury.

Salisbury Health Care History
An interesting web site has just been uploaded concerning the history of Salisbury Hospital extending back into the 16th century.
If nothing else it makes fascinating reading. Florence Nightingale features quite a bit.
Even the Camera Club's current venue is here. Click on THIS to see.
You can visit the Hospital museum on the 5th floor if you wish too.

Volunteers sought to locate, investigate and record
Dear All,
I am writing to let you know
about our public art project. This project aims to locate,
record and photograph public art, namely artwork made by an
artist, arts practitioner or craftsperson and located in
publicly accessible spaces and places in Wiltshire. Data
collected as part of the project will be made available in the
Local Studies Library at the Wiltshire & Swindon History
Centre with images deposited in the Historic Photograph and
Print Collection. The images will then be pinned to the Know
Your Place site http://www.kypwest.org.uk to map
their location geographically. More details can be found at
this link:
https://creativewiltshire.com/ get-involved/
and on the attached flyer.
Creative Wiltshire are running a series of
workshops across the county for those interested in getting
involved in the project; to help prepare, organise and collate
material. Volunteers are encouraged to register their interest
to help support public art in the places that matter to them.
I’ve attached details of the first workshop
to be held in Calne Library on Tuesday 11 July 2017 at 6pm to
7pm. This is followed by a workshop at Marlborough Library on
Thursday 20 July 2017, 6-7pm. Other dates are in the process
of being arranged in other locations across the county. Please
email
localstudies@wiltshire.gov.uk to find out more details
on these events.
We’d very much appreciate it if you could
forward this to your networks, club members or to anyone you
think might be interested in helping us with this project.
Please also feel free to include this information in any
newsletters or distributions/circulations you might have.
Many thanks
Best
Wishes
Meril

Wilfred Chaplin Photograph 1945
An old member Wilfred was a clever and good photographer. He it was who made the Bull Trophy for the most humorous photograph sadly now abandoned because it so hard to get a good funny photograph. W A Chaplin was a dab hand at this genre as you can see in the archives on our site.
The Chaplin bowl is named after him too. It is now awarded for the Highest Aggregate Score in the Gold PDI in the current club year. See HERE and HERE for more. This has changed the way it has been awarded over the years so for instance in from 2008 until 2014 it was awarded to Silver members for the best Prints scores accumulated over the season.

Dear Mr. Temlett,
I've attached a press release about an exciting new book Two Rivers Press has just published: Fox Talbot & the Reading Establishment. I think this book might be of interest to those members of the Salisbury Camera Club who are interested in the history of photography.
In 1843, the photography pioneer, William Henry Fox Talbot and his associate, Nicolaas Henneman, set up the first commercial studio to mass-produce photographs from negatives and they chose the Berkshire town of Reading as its location. The Reading Establishment, as it became known, marks a pivotal moment in the development of photography. Martin Andrews tells the story of these momentous events and places them in the context of the discovery and early history of photography.
Please feel free to forward this information to your members or anyone one else in the organisation who might find it of interest. If the Salisbury Camera Club wishes to announce the publication of Martin Andrews' book, 'Fox Talbot & the Reading Establishment' in your newsletter or on a website or Facebook page, please feel free to do so. We would be happy to provide a cover illustration and a URL to link to.
NB: the book is normally priced at £10.00 but as 2014 is Two Rivers Press' 20th anniversary, there is a 20% discount off all orders placed via our website, on the 20th of each month throughout the year. This means that 'Fox Talbot & the Reading Establishment' is only £8.00 if ordered on the 20th of August, September, October, November and December!
This book is also available in bookstores (though it might have to be ordered!)
There is more information and about Martin Andrews and the book on our website, from which one can also order copies of the book:
http://tworiverspress.com/wp/fox-talbot-the-reading-establishment/
We can also provide terms and conditions for review copies, discounts on purchases of 10 or more copies, or reselling of the books. If you require further assistance, please contact me or Sally Mortimore on 07834 827611 for enquiries about discounts, (Mon – Fri 10am-3pm): Email: sallym@tworiverspress.com or to place orders please contact Barbara on 0118 987 1452 or emailorders@tworiverspress.com.
The workshops are held in Dorchester, Dorset.
Kind regards,
Karen

Sid Finch and the Sanger Trophy
We have received a lovely email with details of Sid Finch from his daughter.
What has this to do with the Club?
Answer: a member H M Wood took a Portrait photograph of Sid and entered it into the 1961 Sanger Trophy. So this information has been placed in the Archives section of our web site. If you click HERE you can see for yourself this fascinating story.

More Club History
There are two new galleries showing some interesting snippets of events in the Club in the past.
- At one time we had an exhibition in the Library in Amesbury. The date is unknown - unless you know better? Find this HERE
- The next item is some pictures that were in a postal competition over 100 years ago. The interesting part is the critiques that came with the images. The remarks are amazingly similar to those we hear today. Read these HERE
- Note in the above gallery is a single photo taken in 1946 of an exhibition. Where was this held? Does anyone recognise the room? Let me if you do please.
