This exhibition is a celebration of the life and work of the distinguished Brighton photographer Bill Wisden MBE Hon FRPS.

Bill was a member of the Brighton & Hove Camera Club from 1954 until his death in January 2018 and in honour of his talent, achievements and generosity we as a Club wish to honour Bill’s work.

He will be remembered by many for his passion for photography and the amazing generosity of his time spent helping others to develop their own photography. He was always happy to give an honest opinion on a photograph and had the gift of immediately seeing the strengths or weaknesses of an image.

Whether it was in the dark room or later digitally, using Photoshop, he constantly pushed the boundaries and produced work that was well ahead of its time. Bill would refer to himself not as a photographer but as an image maker.

He won many awards and was well known internationally for his astute composition, humorous juxtapositions, use of colour and, later on, the digital manipulation in his images, creating, what he fondly called, “Wisdens”.

Amongst his many distinctions was that he was invited to become the youngest member of the London Salon of Photography in 1962.

A year later in 1963 he gained his Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) and over the years he worked tirelessly to promote and improve the RPS by serving on numerous boards and panels.

In 2011 Bill was awarded an MBE for his services to the Arts.

This exhibition is only a small part of Bill’s photographic life and is a mixture of his revolutionary darkroom prints and the digital work that he came to embrace even though he once swore he would never go digital. “I’m too old and you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. How wrong he was! He was so ahead of what others were doing in the early days of Photoshop.

Brighton & Hove Camera Club wants this exhibition to be a tribute to a man who is still greatly missed and will continue to be missed by everyone who loved him and learned so much from him.

Obituary for Ivor Smith

Ivor was a member of Salisbury and Ringwood Camera clubs for many years. In Salisbury he wins his first Trophy in 1983 and his last in 2008/9. You can see all this information and every other Trophy winner in Salisbury CC from 1954 HERE

Ivor used to run a repair garage in the village of Broad Chalke. He had a collection of prints he made of the village. I believe he found the glass negatives in the village. He gave copies to the church.

Ivor Smith has died

My father Ivor Smith passed away on 25th October at the age of 91. 

He was a member of the Salisbury Camera Club for many years and his name is on some of the trophies. 

His funeral will be at 1:45 pm on 12th November at the Salisbury Crematorium with a gathering afterwards at the Queen’s Head, Broad Chalke.

Obituary for Rose Snape

Rose Snape

Rose Snape died in March 2018 at the age of 87. Rose was made an Honorary Member of Salisbury Camera Club in 2014 in recognition of her lifetime’s love of photography and her long and loyal service to the Club. She retired as a member of the Committee in 2011. Her final responsibilities included recording and cataloguing entries for internal club competitions and for organising refreshments on club evenings.

As far as we can tell, Rose first joined Salisbury Camera Club in 1953, making her membership one of at least 65 years: a remarkable achievement. Her photographic work began in the field of darkroom black and white, moving into colour slides as time passed. Although Rose did not move into the digital age as a photographer, she continued to play her part in the life of the club, enjoying the variety of work produced by younger members and the contributions made by speakers. It is fair to say that she preferred a relatively traditional approach to photography and was not too enamoured of large amounts of digital manipulation. Several of her images are to be found in the archive section of the Club website and she was a winner of competitions, such as the Sloane Stanley Cup and The Club Trophy in 1983.

The earliest reference we can find to her being a member of the Salisbury Camera Club Committee is 1964, when Rose became Programme Secretary. It was the first of a variety of roles she undertook on behalf of the Club over the next 57 years. Rose was one of those modest, but vital members of any community organisation. She worked quietly behind the scenes undertaking important tasks without expecting loud thanks or reward.

Rose was added to the Southern Photographic Federation “Roll of Honour” in 2010, following a recommendation by Salisbury Camera Club, for her long service to both photography and to the Club.

Cath Carey CPAGB Hon Member

I am sad to have to tell you that Cath Carey died on Friday 23rd May 2015.
Cath was a long time member and one of our Honary Members.
Her funeral will take place on Monday 8th June 2105 at 12.15 at Salisbury Crematorium. There will be a wake afterwards at the Grasmere Hotel.
There will be a display of Cath's photography in the hotel.
