Wilfred Chaplin Photograph 1945

An old member Wilfred was a clever and good photographer. He it was who made the Bull Trophy for the most humorous photograph sadly now abandoned because it so hard to get a good funny photograph. W A Chaplin was a dab hand at this genre as you can see in the archives on our site.
The Chaplin bowl is named after him too. It is now awarded for the Highest Aggregate Score in the Gold PDI in the current club year. See HERE and  HERE for more. This has changed the way it has been awarded over the years so for instance in from 2008 until 2014 it was awarded to Silver members for the best Prints scores accumulated over the season.

Rainbow Photographic Competition

Rainbow over Salisbury Photographic Competition
10 September 2016 – 19 February 2017
Calling all photographers! We are looking for the best photograph of a rainbow over the skies of Salisbury. This is inspired by John Constable’s painting Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows 1831, which will form part of a major exhibition at the museum from 17 September 2016 – 25 March 2017.
The competition is open to photographers of all ages and abilities and the prizes are:

First prize Vouchers to the value of £200
Second prize Vouchers to the value of £100
Third prize Vouchers to the value of £50
all generously donated by the Salisbury branch of London Camera Exchange.

All you need to do is to take a photograph of a rainbow over Salisbury and email it to rainbow@salisburymuseum.org.uk before 19 February 2017. The judging panel will comprise members of London Camera Exchange, Plain Arts Salisbury and Salisbury Museum. The winner will be notified by email and the three winning photographs will be exhibited at the museum until 25 March 2017.

Tips for rainbow spotting from rainbow expert Professor John Thornes:

A rainbow is possible at any time of day between mid September and mid March
Rainbows are best seen early in the morning and late in the afternoon
Rainbows are more common in the afternoon as rain showers have had more time to develop

Remember the sun must be behind you so look towards the west in the morning and towards the east in the afternoon and to the north at midday between September and March. You will never see a rainbow to the south!

How to Enter

You must enter online by emailing your entry, along with a covering email to rainbow@salisburymuseum.org.uk All entries must be submitted as digital files. There is no limit to the number of entries you may submit

Image requirements for entries: JPG files (Please keep the maximum file size to 2MB to ensure proper uploading). The file that you attach is exactly as it will appear to the judges

The competition is open to photographers, amateur or professional of any age

All entry files must be named with artist's last name (underscore) first name, followed by the entry number (if you submit multiple entries) (i.e. Jones_Mike_1.jpg). Please do not include any other information in the file name, such as title of work.

Please do not submit links to jpeg files (Google Docs or otherwise)

The deadline for entries is 19 February 2017 and the winner will be notified by 1 March 2017. The judges’ decision is final.

Copyright for all images submitted for this competition remains with the respective entrants. Each entrant by entering the completion, grants permission to Salisbury Museum to use their work for promotional purposes.

The current Constable in Context exhibition and related activity are part of Aspire, a partnership programme touring Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows 1831 across the UK. Aspire is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Art Fund.

An Invitation from Chichester Camera Club

Members of your Club are cordially invited to Chichester Camera Club's sixteenth advanced members' exhibition to be held on Saturday, 14th January 2017 at the North Mundham Village Hall. The exhibition will be open between 10am and 5pm with refreshments, light lunches and teas available throughout the day. If anyone cannot make it on the Saturday, we will be open on the following day (Sunday) between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. We will also have refreshments available on that day. Print exhibitors have had the choice of varying screen spaces with the freedom to display virtually any type of work they wish with no rules on size, subject matter technique, etc. whilst PDI workers are each allowed to have up to 4 images projected, again with no subject ruling. Based on our previous, similar exhibitions, this freedom of choice has resulted in a considerable display of artistic talent. The day has also proved to be a great social occasion. We hope you will be able to visit us and look forward to meeting you on the 14th January. See our web site at for directions.

WHERE: The Quadrant, Stonehill Green, Westmead, Swindon SN5 7DJ

WHEN: Thursday 3rd to Monday 7th November 2016, open daily from 10am to 3pm

WHAT: The photographers participating in this theme have sent us striking images of the widest range of species, from elephants to insects. Many of the images in our Wildlife of the World exhibition highlight the relationships that species have with their habitats. Shining through each image is the photographer's admiration and empathy with the subject, together with their sheer joy and sense of privilege in being able to photograph them. We hope this exhibition will encourage our visitors to make a personal commitment to help preserve our biosphere and it's fauna. After all, most of our genes are also found in many animals. It is ignorant of us to ignore our true nature.

COST: Entry is free - No tickets required

WHO: Anyone who you think may enjoy a photographic exhibition!

WEBSITE: www.thephotographicangle.co.uk
(Please note that dates may be subject to change. We advise you to check our website for the latest information prior to attendance. Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize

I am writing on behalf of the Friends of the Ridgeway. And to bring to the attention of members of your organisation an arts prize.

The Ridgeway – the oldest road in Britain – historically was a trackway providing a reliable trading route from the Dorset coast along the chalk Downs to the Wash in Norfolk. Today it is not only the oldest road but part of that original route is a National Trail; it is also a wonderful resource for all the communities that live along its route, not just walkers where visitors and locals alike can enjoy walking, riding or just being there.

The Friends of the Ridgeway, a voluntary organisation and registered charity, is committed to the preservation in perpetuity of all the natural aspects and features of the ancient Ridgeway. Details of the Friends are at http://www.ridgewayfriends.org.uk/ As part of our work, based on a generous donation, The Friends of The Ridgeway have established an annual arts competition and prize – the Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize. The aim of the competition is to bring The Ridgeway to life not only as a long distance trail but as an artistic inspiration, and to show The Ridgeway, its history and environs, in all their aspects throughout all seasons. The theme is ‘The Ridgeway: history, ecology, and landscape across the surrounding environs ’. There will be separate classes for painting, sculpture, photography and writing (poetry or prose).

This prize maybe of interest to your members. In addition to photography, there are three other categories of work invited, being painting and drawing, sculpture, photography and written work. I would be grateful if you could bring the competition to the notice of members.

Terry wins the Salisbury Eye Photo Competition

Well done Terry

"To get this photo I had to stand with my back up against a shop wall, but had to wait some 20 minutes to get the shot as many cars passing in the road and many people on the pavement.
I cropped the road (in the foreground) out of the shot as the pavement the other side is at a strange angle and made the whole photo look wrong.

Taken at the wide angle end of my 18-200 lens (on Sony A6000 camera with APS-C 24.2 Mps sensor) , at F11 and 1/750 with no additional exposure corrections.

In Lightroom I used a little Dehaze (to get the contrast in the clouds), turned Highlights right down to left, Shadows right up to right and then used one of the Lightroom Landscape HDR presets but adjusted a few sliders a little as the 'gondolas' on the wheel were a little too dark. I did try to get a better look by using Lightroom Adjustment Brush but could not get both realism and good overall exposure, then finished it off in Photoshop with a small Levels adjustment.

I got a Kindle Fire HD8 as a prize (plus Family ticket for eye) and am now trying to set it up to be able to use Google Play Apps (it normally ONLY uses Amazon Apps) so I can use it as a remote for my Sony A6000, via it's wifi mode.

I am also hoping I can add an Intervalometer App which will be easier than using the one I use at the moment, which is plug in and rather awkward when camera on tripod and came with very minimal instructions for use (from China)."
