Alabaré Photography Competition

Alabaré is a Salisbury based charity supporting the homeless including homeless veterans. The lockdown has had a major impact on the charity at a time when the support to the homeless increased while fundraising almost stopped. I have been an Alabaré Ambassador since Nov 19 and to support the charity I instigated a fundraising photography competition. Tony Oliver has been most helpful in giving freely his experiences of various photography competitions in order that I could help steer the fundraising team at Alabaré.  I am pleased to announce that the Alabaré 2020 Photography Competition has now been launched. There is a full advertising programme being developed and as part of that I have taken on spreading the word among the various photographic clubs. If you have any advice on how this is best achieved please do let me know.

Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival Photographic Competition

The theme of the competition is Snowdrops or  Winter Landscape, (with or without Snowdrops)!

There are 3 age group classes all with cash prizes and it is only the adult class that we are charging £4 per photographer

It is difficult get the word out to the widest audience possible and I am therefore wondering if you could let your members know about it at one of your forthcoming meetings. I have attached a poster below.

James Allen of Shepton Mallet (1830 - 1906) was the first person to breed new snowdrop varieties from the wild plants and he is the inspiration for the Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival, now in its fourth year.

APPENDIX THREE DEFINITION OF NATURE TO BE USED IN PAGB COMPETITIONS 

Note that images already meeting the separate FIAP Definition of Nature will satisfy this less restrictive definition.

Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archaeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality.

Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are permissible.
Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the
photographic statement. Processing of the captured image, by cropping, exposure adjustment, colour correction, noise minimisation, dodging/burning, HDR, focus stacking and sharpening, is allowed.

Cloning of image defects and minor distractions, including overlapping elements, are permitted when these do not distort the truth of the photographic statement. Images entered as Nature can have landscape, geologic formations, weather phenomena, and extant organisms as the primary subject matter. This includes images taken with the subjects in controlled conditions, such as zoos, game farms, botanical gardens, aquariums and any enclosure where the subjects are totally dependent
on man for food. Access to biological subjects may be restricted. By entering a PAGB event,
necessary licences.

LAST CHANCE FOR HAMPSHIRE RESIDENTS TO ENTER ART COMPETITION

Now open to anybody in the Andover area.
As mentioned, we’re in the last week of taking entries for our art and photography competition. We are looking for entrants to take photos or produce pictures highlighting the natural beauty in Andover and its surrounding areas – the competition is going to be judged by Pip McGarry, world renowned wildlife artist and the winner will receive £500, with two runners up getting £100.

Time is running out for people in Hampshire to submit their entries for an art competition which is being run by Pure Cremation, the leading direct cremation specialist behind the new Charlton Park Crematorium in Andover.

As the deadline of Friday 14th December approaches, Pure Cremation is calling on people to capture Andover in a work of art, to be in with a chance of winning £500 as well as the opportunity to have their art publicly displayed when Charlton Park Crematorium is opened in spring 2019.

With Pip McGarry, one of the world’s leading wildlife artists and the ‘Artist-in-Residence’ at Marwell Zoological Park, lined-up to perform guest judging duties, the creative competition is open to residents of Hampshire who are over 18.

Works of art can be submitted in any form, as long as they can be hung on the walls of the new crematorium; so photographs are welcomed, along with drawings or paintings created in any medium such as oil, acrylic, pencil, charcoal, watercolour or pastel

Entries, which should be clearly labelled on the back with the entrant’s name, address and contact details, can be posted to: Charlton Park Crematorium Art Competition, C/O McCann PR, Pure Cremation Team, Communications House, Highlands Road, Shirley, Solihull, West Midlands, B90 4WE. Hello,

I’m just touching base and emailing you to let you know that BJP International Photography Award 2019 is open for submissions until 20 December 2018.

The award has long as established itself as an entry-point into the photography industry, and has been credited with launching the careers of some of the industries most recognisable names, such as Juno Calypso [my U3A group Practical Photography love Juno's work as seen at Messums recently], Chloe Dewe Mathews and Daniel Castro Garcia.

British Army Photographic Competition 2018

The Army Photographic Competition 2018 is now open and it promises to be better than ever before with another new public category Operation Smart Phone, giving keen videographers, whether civilian, Navy or RAF, a chance to use their phone and submit a video with a British Army theme.

Are you an civilian photographer with a love of all things Army? Operation Camera will give your army-themed photographs a chance to shine. It was so successful last year, we have decided to run it again. Cadet Life, also returns for a second year. Check online for eligibility, terms and conditions.

The traditional categories are open to all Regular Army and Army Reserve personnel and cadets of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), Army Cadet Force (ACF), University Officer Training Corps (Army) and Ministry of Defence civilians who work directly for the Army. As soldiers first, Army photographers deploy into fields of operation with units to capture life on front lines and training areas around the world. They are the eyes of the Army and capture an unrivalled view of Army life right at the heart of the action.

Command Master Photographer WO1 (Cdr) Will Craig says: “I am genuinely excited for this year’s Army Photographic Competition. The new category Operation Smart Phone smashes the competition wide open enabling anyone including the public to enter the video category for the very first time.

“The quality of video that the modern phone can produce is excellent. There are lots of great prizes this year and you have to be in it to win it.”

The ever-popular online category as voted by the public is now hosted on the website at www.army.mod.uk/photocomp.

Judges will be looking for high quality photographs and videos, which can be used to promote the Army across traditional and social media channels.

SHASTON CHALLENGE VICTORY FOR SAL CC

Last night 22nd March 4 members of the Club ventured along to Shaftesbury to witness a wonderful and unexpected win over the other three teams. They were Ferndown, Frome Selwood and Shaftesbury CC.

There were 48 projected images - 12 from each club.

The judge was Rob Barron from Poole CC who did an excellent job except for one image where he gave it his lowest score of 7.5. I know it was an aberration because I have scored 10 in the past!

The amazing part of the evening was that after 24 images we had a break. At this point we were in last place with 52 points. Other scores were 53, 53.5 and 55.5. We did not stand a chance.

BUT when the second 24 were judged and the totals for each club displayed we were astonished to see that we had won by a whole half point.

The final totals were 104.5 Frome & Selwood, 105.5 Ferndown, 105.5 for Shaftesbury and 106 for us!

Moreover we only had one 10 for Jane Osborne's The Escape. So CONGRATULATIONS JANE. There were 7 tens in all.

WITH summer upon us VisitWiltshire is calling on residents up and down the county to get out and about and capture the finest views on offer to be in with the chance of winning themselves a piece of new kit.

Castle Cameras in Salisbury are offering up a Nikon D3300 camera with 18-55 lens – worth over £300 – for the best photograph overall, plus two runners up prizes of a £50 gift voucher each to spend at Castle Cameras.

After a very busy year last year, in which the tourist board received scores of entries from budding photographers in Swindon and Wiltshire, they are urging snappers to make the most of the fine summer weather and get out and about to capture the most scenic shots they can find.

To be in with a chance of winning, your photos should capture the essence of life in Wiltshire, its people and landscape, and tie in with any of VisitWiltshire’s four ‘Timeless’ themes:

• Timeless Wonders: including Stonehenge, Avebury, Salisbury Cathedral, the Kennet & Avon Canal and Wiltshire’s White Horses

• Timeless Places: including market towns, villages and other attractions

• Timeless Pleasures: including shopping, food and drink, festivals and events, arts and entertainment

• Timeless Nature: including big skies, rolling hills, flora and fauna

Among some of the entries in last year’s competition were an atmospheric shot of Bradford on Avon by Andy Stevens, a stunning view from Cley Hill by Krzysztof Dac, and a swan at Langford Lakes by Martin Harris.

VisitWiltshire’s marketing manager Jenny Butler said: “The recent spell of lovely weather has provided plenty of opportunities for keen photographers to get out and about with their cameras – based on previous years we know there is loads of talent out there, so we are looking forward to seeing some amazing shots.”
