Photographic Competition - Europe is Beautiful

CEWE PHOTOBOOK needs you...

A couple of months ago we launched a fabulous photographic competition called EUROPE IS BEAUTIFUL, which as the name suggests, is a Europe wide competition celebrating the beauty and diversity of our continent.

http://contest.cewe-fotobuch.de/eib2012/en

2012 has been such a great year to be British... we celebrated the Queen¹s diamond Jubilee as well as huge success at the Olympics and Paralympics, and despite the fact that it¹s been a rather wet summer, we still feel sure that you have loads of fantastic photos lurking on your laptops. So, why not share them and be in with a chance to win one of 500 amazing prizes that are on offer.

Loads of prizes to win...

http://contest.cewe-fotobuch.de/eib2012/en/main/prizes

Let¹s show the rest of Europe just how beautiful our country is and how proud we are of these fair Isles.

Entering is simple! Just go to the competition site and register your details: http://contest.cewe-fotobuch.de/eib2012/en/photos/add

You’re history!

Hi,
I was wondering if any your members interested in “photographing history” might like come along an enjoy You’re history!* at Broadlands, Romsey, Hampshire on 22-23 September.
This is a major Classical Greek to 1990s multi-era living history show with 700 performers from 50 top groups, battles, displays, encampments, children’s entertainments and more, all set within a beautiful setting and carefully arranged to be as photogenic as possible – so, no burger vans, other visitors or modern intrusions spoiling the backdrop of displays etc.
We’ve found that photographers and their families love this show (now in its third year) so perhaps you might like to make your members (and other photographic groups that you might know) aware of it? Full details including the timetable of displays is posted up at www.you’rehistory.co.uk or www.eventplan.co.uk
* previously known as Blasts from the Past!
Please note that we aren’t able to offer special access for safety reasons because of the horses, guns, other weapons and explosives in use, and we ask photographers to observe our usual viewing arrangements (eg by not standing up in front of those seated & viewing behind), but we find that everybody is able to take plenty of excellent shots. The living history areas are of course ideal for photographers, and the re-enactors will often pose for particular shots.
Admission is very reasonable, only £10 adult, £5 child or £25 family of four. We recommend coming on the Saturday because as there is so much to see, visitors often like to come back on the Sunday. Tickets are available each day (only).
I do hope that your members will be interested!

Following the summer break, I should imagine that camera clubs are starting to meet to discuss new ideas, competitions and the thought of the beautiful autumn colours that will follow over the next few months.

Here at Ammerdown we are very much looking forward to welcoming him back to lead a weeks Autumn Photo project in the beautiful surrounds of the Ammerdown Centre which is in the Somerset countryside on an idyllic estate.

FIAP DISTINCTIONS CRITERIA

Have assured your FIAP Liaison Officer as late, as July this year, that the announced changes to the criteria would go ahead, FIAP have now changed their minds! At their Directory Board Meeting, held immediately before opening of the FIAP Congress in Singapore, they decided to defer the changes, and on the opening day of Congress announced that the changes to the criteria for AFIAP, EFIAP and MFIAP would not now come into force until the 1st July 2013.

This means that the 2013 submission of applications will now be subject to the criteria that were in forced in 2012. The relevant documents on the PAGB Website are being updated and if not already done, then they will be as soon as the Webmaster can implement the changes. The replacement documents will be annotated with the words "Post FIAP Congress". You should refer to them for full details.

I am aware that this change might well be greeted with enthusiasm by many, but there will be a number of others seeking EFIAP for whom the changes might be less welcome. Please understand that I have already made representations about these issues, but as was pointed out to me, there will always be some who lose out when changes are made.

Dave Coates. FIAP Liasion Officer.

SOUTH DOWNS PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION

Hunt for photos of life in the South Downs
Comedian and actor Hugh Dennis will help to judge a photo competition challenging people to capture ‘Life in our Landscapes’ in the South Downs National Park this summer.
Hugh Dennis, who lives in the South Downs National Park, said:
“The spectacular landscapes of the South Downs only exist because of the people who have shaped them over the past 6,000 years. I’ll be looking for a winning image that captures a story of the people who live, work and visit here today.”
Prizes for the competition, launched by the South Downs National Park, include £150 in vouchers to spend at Petersfield Photographic, a year’s subscription to Outdoor Photography magazine and a day of landscape photography training with photographer Simon Parsons.
The other judges are Steven Watkins, editor of Outdoor Photography magazine, Nick Heasman, Western Area Manager for the South Downs National Park and Doug Jones, Member of the South Downs National Park Authority.
Steve Watkins, whose office is based in the South Downs National Park said:
“It takes a different creative approach to capture an image of life on a farm, in a market town or of a paraglider soaring over the hills than it does to photograph an empty landscape.
“My tips would be to clearly define your main subject and then make that the most important element; and wait for a telling moment to press the shutter button – it could be the turn of a head, a smile, a person walking by or the paraglider executing a steep turn. My winning shot will tell the story of when people and landscape come together.”
Nick Heasman, Western Area Manager for the South Downs National Park and a keen amateur photographer said:
“The landscapes of the South Downs National Park are as much about people as they are about place. I can't wait to see images showing the relationship between man and the land, capturing tales of our rich cultural heritage, community pride, enterprise and recreation – the life in our market towns, at local festivals, working in farms and out on our footpaths.”
The competition closes on 15 October 2012. Information on how to enter and full terms and conditions are available at www.southdowns.gov.uk/photocomp2012.

SPF News Update August 2012

So here we are in the middle of ( occasional!) summer, when most clubs will have ceased activity until the new season starts.   Looking ahead to that, a lot of things have been happening, changes are afoot, and there are important dates that all clubs need to be aware of, especially some early deadlines.
Most of these items are covered in detail on the SPF Web-site which is now in the hands of Ken Scott.  Ken has taken over this from Steve Kirkby who stepped down after a few years of doing a brilliant job.
Firstly, some important things from the AGM.  Our new President is Glyn Edmunds. Terri Neil-Griffin, after her splendid two years as President, has taken on responsibility for the Leagues, and the post of Treasurer, vacant at the time of the AGM, has since been taken on by Keith Berry.  The full Council membership can be seen at http://www.southernfed.org.uk/contact.htm?20120519
There is an important change of date for the next Quarterly Reps meeting / EGM.  This will now be on Tuesday 9th October.  One of the items to be discussed is a new format for the Reps meetings where it is suggested we have fewer meetings but on a weekend day with a wider agenda of items including perhaps talks, demonstrations etc.  We need all clubs to be considering ideas for this in advance of the EGM so that we have some solid proposals to discuss / agree at the EGM.
The new Judging Workshops being run by Ken Scott are now in full swing. There are still a few vacancies for the next workshops; see the details on http://www.southernfed.org.uk/judging/20121118_Poster.pdf
The new League Season will be kicking off in October. all participating clubs need to have their entries ( Print title plus PDI images) submitted by Sunday October 7th. As voted for at the AGM, titles will now be read out before images are judged, so if you are one of those who feel that titles can influence the judge, get your creative hats on! Click on http://www.southernfed.org.uk/league.htm for all details.
An early deadline to be aware of is for potential entries for the PAGB PDI Exhibition.  Lynn Lambert needs your submissions for consideration by 16th September.  See details on the main web-site page http://www.southernfed.org.uk/
The first big event of the new season will be the inaugural Digital AV Champoionships, being held on 28th October. All the details are just a click away on http://www.southernfed.org.uk/championshipsav.htm. The deadline for entries is 7th October. If you club has not previously been into AVs, now is the chance to try your hand and learn from participating in the Championships.
Many clubs are holding exhibitions during the summer recess.  The SPF Web-site http://www.southernfed.org.uk/ is a great place to advertise your club's exhibition or other event ( free!) and likewise is a good source to see what's happening around the federation's area.
There are lots of other things to read about on the web-site, including details of the 12 photographers from our Federation who have successfully attained FIAP Distinctions,  so do make regular visits to make sure you are up-to-date.
Finally to repeat a plea from the AGM.  This is the time of year when many clubs have changes in their committees, officers etc.  Keeping track of these changes is quite hard work for the various SPF officers who need to maintain current e-mail data-bases, and if there are any errors or omissions in these then vital communications can go adrift.
What would really help would be if every club which has a web-site adopted generic e-mail addresses such as secretary@myphotoclub.org.uk, treasurer @..... etc . Once set up, these addresses can be set to direct mail to the personal address of the appropriate person in the club; then when a change happens all that is needed is for the club to update that link internally while SPF and other external contacts continue to use the generic address.    At the present time just 14 out of 63 clubs are using generic addresses so there's plenty of room for this to be improved!!
I Hope you all enjoy what's left of the summer, getting lots of great images in the bag for next season.
John Hodge
SPF Council member

Invitation for 36th International Salon of Photography

Dear friends of photography,

The 36th Taipei International Salon of Photography competition is open now.  It is my great pleasure to invite you to participate with your best pictures.

We have received outstanding amount of works in 2011 and hit a record high in both Picture Color Image and Nature Color Image sections. There were so many fantastic and excellent pictures from 55 countries around the world, which really gave us great enjoyments and made it again a very successful global photographers’ exchange.

The foundation laid by the Taipei International Salon of Photography in the international arena in the past has proved very solid by receiving such high degree of recognition from the international photographic societies. We really appreciate your past participation with passion.

The innovative concept of photography has been surging with the help of advanced digital technology. It is a trend and should be bound to leave valuable track in the history.

Once again, we cordially welcome your continued participation this year to work together to create our history.

International Gardener Photographer of the Year

International Gardener Photographer of the Year

Hello,
I work at the Winchester Discovery Centre where we currently have 85 of the best images from the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition on display in our gallery. I imagine this will be of interest to members of your photographic club, so wondered if you could please forward this message to anyone who might be interested in visiting? The exhibition is free to visit and runs until 30 September.
We are also very lucky to be joined by competition director Philip Smith who will give a one-off tour of the gallery and workshop in September:

PAGB News No. 72

Hi All

Please click on this link to see Issue 72 which has News from Warwick,  the complete list of FIAP Distinction recipients from the 2012 PAGB Application  and results and winning photos from the Inter-Federation Print competition.

We are a little concerned that e-news is proving to be more frequent than we intended but if we are to publish lots of photos - which we think is what you mostly want to see - then we cannot let them get too big.  We will aim for a minimum of 2-3 weeks between issues.

This issue is already bigger than we would like at 2MB and may take a little time to download.  Please be patient - sometimes it looks like the link isn't working but e-news is downloading in the background without your system telling you.

Your comments on frequency are very welcome.

Dave Coates, our FIAP Officer, has asked me to include this note.

"I would like to convey my sincere thanks for all the kind and generous emails of thanks I have received following the completion of the 2012 submission.  Yes, there was a large amount of work, but the sentiments expressed go a long way to making it all worthwhile.  I haven't had chance to answer each and every one individually but I am grateful for your support.  Thank you."

Best wishes,   Dave

Photo exhibition in Salisbury

We have a photo exhibition in Salisbury library - it's a selection from the collection of Richard Dawkins (that's Dawkins the photographer, NOT Dawkins the science writer). He worked with all sorts of people including Bailey and Lichfield and started collecting their work a long time ago. This exhibition has all sorts of interesting stuff. I had never heard of photographer John Cowan but there is some lovely work of his in the show so I'm going to go digging for more.

It's at Salisbury public library in the city centre, open during library hours and runs until the 28th. July. Admission is free. Library website: http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/artsheri...libcode=SALLIB .

PAGB News No. 70

Hi All
Please click on this link to see Issue 70 of e-news from the PAGB which is an obituary special for John Wells - a very busy and popular lecturer whose company a great many of you will have enjoyed.
It is unusual to run such a special but I received so many comments from John's friends that I thought it appropriate in this case.
http://www.pagbnews.co.uk/e-news/en70050712JohnWells.pdf
We have also been saddened to hear of the passing of Tom Fearn on Sunday June 17th June.  Tom was a past president of the NCPF and, some years ago, a member of the PAGB Executive.  We will publish more in a future e-news.
