Wilfred Chaplin Photograph 1945

An old member Wilfred was a clever and good photographer. He it was who made the Bull Trophy for the most humorous photograph sadly now abandoned because it so hard to get a good funny photograph. W A Chaplin was a dab hand at this genre as you can see in the archives on our site.
The Chaplin bowl is named after him too. It is now awarded for the Highest Aggregate Score in the Gold PDI in the current club year. See HERE and  HERE for more. This has changed the way it has been awarded over the years so for instance in from 2008 until 2014 it was awarded to Silver members for the best Prints scores accumulated over the season.

Rainbow Photographic Competition

Rainbow over Salisbury Photographic Competition
10 September 2016 – 19 February 2017
Calling all photographers! We are looking for the best photograph of a rainbow over the skies of Salisbury. This is inspired by John Constable’s painting Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows 1831, which will form part of a major exhibition at the museum from 17 September 2016 – 25 March 2017.
The competition is open to photographers of all ages and abilities and the prizes are:

First prize Vouchers to the value of £200
Second prize Vouchers to the value of £100
Third prize Vouchers to the value of £50
all generously donated by the Salisbury branch of London Camera Exchange.

All you need to do is to take a photograph of a rainbow over Salisbury and email it to rainbow@salisburymuseum.org.uk before 19 February 2017. The judging panel will comprise members of London Camera Exchange, Plain Arts Salisbury and Salisbury Museum. The winner will be notified by email and the three winning photographs will be exhibited at the museum until 25 March 2017.

Tips for rainbow spotting from rainbow expert Professor John Thornes:

A rainbow is possible at any time of day between mid September and mid March
Rainbows are best seen early in the morning and late in the afternoon
Rainbows are more common in the afternoon as rain showers have had more time to develop

Remember the sun must be behind you so look towards the west in the morning and towards the east in the afternoon and to the north at midday between September and March. You will never see a rainbow to the south!

How to Enter

You must enter online by emailing your entry, along with a covering email to rainbow@salisburymuseum.org.uk All entries must be submitted as digital files. There is no limit to the number of entries you may submit

Image requirements for entries: JPG files (Please keep the maximum file size to 2MB to ensure proper uploading). The file that you attach is exactly as it will appear to the judges

The competition is open to photographers, amateur or professional of any age

All entry files must be named with artist's last name (underscore) first name, followed by the entry number (if you submit multiple entries) (i.e. Jones_Mike_1.jpg). Please do not include any other information in the file name, such as title of work.

Please do not submit links to jpeg files (Google Docs or otherwise)

The deadline for entries is 19 February 2017 and the winner will be notified by 1 March 2017. The judges’ decision is final.

Copyright for all images submitted for this competition remains with the respective entrants. Each entrant by entering the completion, grants permission to Salisbury Museum to use their work for promotional purposes.

The current Constable in Context exhibition and related activity are part of Aspire, a partnership programme touring Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows 1831 across the UK. Aspire is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Art Fund.

An Invitation from Chichester Camera Club

Members of your Club are cordially invited to Chichester Camera Club's sixteenth advanced members' exhibition to be held on Saturday, 14th January 2017 at the North Mundham Village Hall. The exhibition will be open between 10am and 5pm with refreshments, light lunches and teas available throughout the day. If anyone cannot make it on the Saturday, we will be open on the following day (Sunday) between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. We will also have refreshments available on that day. Print exhibitors have had the choice of varying screen spaces with the freedom to display virtually any type of work they wish with no rules on size, subject matter technique, etc. whilst PDI workers are each allowed to have up to 4 images projected, again with no subject ruling. Based on our previous, similar exhibitions, this freedom of choice has resulted in a considerable display of artistic talent. The day has also proved to be a great social occasion. We hope you will be able to visit us and look forward to meeting you on the 14th January. See our web site at for directions.

Chris Button's apps hints

  •  The photographers ephemeris (TPE) which shows you where the sun will rise and set (there is also an android version).
  •  The app to help you with hyperfocal focussing is 'setmycamera' on apple or 'DOF Calculator' on android.
  •  Lee Filters have created a useful app to show you what shutter speed to use when you've added an extreme long exposure filter. It's only for Apple at the moment although you can use 'ND Filter Timer' for android.
  •  The best app for tidal information is TidesPlanner.
