I have added some further information and images to clarify the method. Tell me if you do not follow please.

Well it is well hidden but it is there.  You can find this and lots of other items that could be useful to you, such as where and when to buy Print Boxes, on the NEWS section.  There are 2 search boxes here.  Select the correct one and put in what you want to know and Google finds the pages for you.

Mix and Match

Well last Thursday we won decisively and it was fun. Babara Holder was the long suffering judge. There was a considerable amount of friendly joshing and remarks to encourage her to decide for one team or the other.
After the first half there was only one point between the teams but at the end the difference was over 20 points. A Great Victory!
How many times now have we been the winners?

We had good support from your Club in this jolly event.  It was highly enjoyable and well worth the trip.

The SPF Digitally Projected Championship 2010

This event will be held on Sunday 21 November at Shaw Social Club, Newbury, hosted by Newbury CC.
Salisbury CC has entered this for the first time and so you would be very welcome to attend.

Audience entry on the day is now free + £1 for membership of the Shaw Social Club.
This is the best opportunity in the season to see PDIs from the SPF clubs.

The judges will be Mrs Jay Charnock FRPS, Mrs Ann Smith ARPS & Mrs Cynthia James LRPS, all from Surrey.
The doors open at 12 noon and judging starts at 2pm; a refreshment break will be taken at around 3pm.
There will also be a substantial raffle.

There are several events this month which will be at venues or on days that are different from our normal Monday.

Monday 11th October

Monday Club: Annual competition versus Southampton and Bournemouth Camera Clubs (Prints and PDI's).

This year Bournemouth are hosting. There will not be a meeting at Harnham, so come to Bournemouth instead. Please note that they have a NEW VENUE from previous years. They now meet at The Bournemouth Natural Science Society, 39 Christchurch Rd. Bournemouth. BH1 3NS

Monday 18th October

Night Photography: Our annual nocturnal foray into Salisbury. Meet at the Cathedral West Front at 7 0'clock and then into town and Salisbury Fair. A tripod will be of use if you have one, but not essential. Finish in the Cloisters pub about 9 O'clock for discussion and refreshment.

Thursday 21st October

Mix and Match Competition v Andover Split Image Camera Club:

Venue; Andover Club meet at The Red Lion Inn, Clanville, Nr Andover SP11 9HN

This is an annual fun event between the two clubs. If you have never been to a mix and match do come, it will be an enjoyable evening.

Monday 25th October

Back to our own venue for a club provided evening. Exact format still to be decided, but possibly looking at images from the Night Photography, Workshops on Photoshop, Print Mounting etc.

If you would like to attend any of the away events and need more details, please let me know. Transport can be arranged if you need it.

The prices remain the same as the last order but do remember that a VAT increase is on the horizon. I pointed out last time that Nomad have rationalized the pricing to some extent by removing the differential between similar sizes, e.g. 2½” depth and 3” depth cost the same. I would also like to point out that Nomad do give a discount on quantity. Obviously this cannot be reflected in the price of individual boxes but any ‘profit’ is paid to the SPF, thus helping to keep Federation costs down.

John comes highly recommended and this promises to be a fascinating and highly rewarding evening

Inter-Club Competitions and Exhibitions 2010/11

For the coming season there will be a number of inter-club competitions and exhibitions requiring print and PDI selection.

The following are already known and require members to submit images to the committee for selection. The type, number and (most importantly the date needed by) are listed below. The date required will allow the selection committee enough time to select and submit entries as necessary.

As in previous years the committee will be pro-active in approaching members for work already seen, however ALL MEMBERS are encouraged to submit suitable images (probably your best work) for consideration that have previously been unseen (if you don’t show us we can’t consider it for selection!)

Southampton CC trip to Stonehenge

Dear Clubs,

Would you please be kind enough to circulate details of a trip to Stonehenge on Friday 17th September. There are a limited number of places and there will be a maximum of 20 photographers.  It's a great chance to share an evening out, and get inside the stones to do some photography.

It's on Friday 17th September at 18:30 until 19:30 (Sunset is 19.15, the moon and Venus will be visible in the sky by 18.30).

The cost is £14.50 or £11.50 to English Heritage/National Trust Members.

David Noton's Photographic and Travel Roadshow

David Noton's Photographic and Travel Roadshow to be held in Andover this November 10th.

David is a worldwide renowned landscape and travel photographer who has been passionate about photography since he started 24 years ago. He has been running his Roadshow for over 2 years now. The show lasts 2 hours using Davids images from all areas of the world, google earth world maps re locations, music, video footage of David in the field with room for viewers question time.

People who have attended before shared with us how much they enjoyed the images with high definition projection accompanied by David's travel tales, technical know how and humour. This has led in some cases to a change in approach to individuals photography and even the hasty press of a mouse whilst planning the next trip! Most of all viewers said how uplifted and inspired they felt.

I have included here a flyer to share with your members to inform anyone who may wish to come along. You can view David's WORK and obtain TICKETS from David's website www.davidnoton.com student tickets at a reduction.

Mottisfont Exhibitions

One of the photographers exhibiting at the Winchester Discovery Centre is local wildlife and landscape photographer, Paul Sansome. He gained a "Highly Commended" for his "Terns in a Queue". I mention this because Paul has a one man exhibition starting at Mottisfont Abbey, tomorrow - Saturday 31 July. The exhibition runs until Thursday 12th August. Note that Mottisfont is not open on Fridays.

I have just come from assisting with the set up, and it's a stunning exhibition.

If you are a National Trust member then entry is free - otherwise normal Mottisfont NT admission charges apply to gain access to the gardens, river walks, house and exhibitions. There is even a new ice cream parlour!

Mottisfont is actually a good day out for all the family. They also have a very interesting Beatrix Potter exhibition at the moment of some of the original watercolours she painted to illustrate her books. Evidently these paintings are only exhibited every ten years or so!

Another one for the diary - Andover Split Image Photographic Society will be exhibiting at Mottisfont later this year - Saturday 28th August to Thursday 2nd September.

Photo Course in Sussex.

Just a note to inform your members of 2 half-day workshops I'm leading on Saturday 31st and Sunday 1st August. It'll be based on the South Downs visiting 3 or 4 locations. Meet will be at Alfriston where we head off in the minibus for the afternoon and evening. Time will be 3pm till sunset. It's summer and as photographer's we are all fully aware that the best time to take landscape images is early morning and evening.

Much of our photography will be centered around the Cuckmere Valley, near Seaford in East Sussex. We will shoot sweeping vistas of Downland hills, the Cuckmere River, The Seven Sisters and as the sun sets, beach scenes and majestic cliffs.

This is suitable for those of all levels, from the beginner to the more experienced shooter.

In order for Robert to spend quality time with each person, numbers will be limited to just 5. Aside from making transportation to various locations much easier, it also makes for a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Cost for the day will be £70 which includes transportation to all locations.

It would be a good idea if you can add your name somewhere in the image plus copyright data just to protect yourselves.

The way to do this will vary depending on the software you use.
For instance on the humble Photoshop Elements 2.0 go to File > Info and the following box appears.

I have filled in the spaces that are needed.
In addition if you click on the Section drop down you can check on the EXIF data.  This will tell you exactly when you took the picture [assuming you set your camera with date and time of course].
The Title section is not necessarily the same as your actual file name. And we do need a proper file name and not the one the camera gave it.

We still need more of your images please.

A true story

At the 1994 annual awards dinner given for Forensic Science, AAFS President Dr Don Harper Mills astounded his audience with the legal complications of a bizarre death.

Thus the story: --------

On March 23, 1994...... The medical examiner viewed the body of Ronald Opus, and concluded that he died from a shotgun wound to the head.

Mr. Opus had jumped from the top of a ten story building intending to commit suicide. He left a note to the effect indicating his despondency.

As he fell past the 9th floor, his life was interrupted by a shotgun blast passing through a window, which killed him instantly.

Neither the shooter nor the deceased was aware that a safety net had been installed just below the 8th floor level to protect some building workers and that Ronald Opus would not have been able to complete his suicide the way he had planned.

'Ordinarily,' Dr Mills continued, 'Someone who sets out to commit suicide and ultimately succeeds, even though the mechanism might not be what he intended, is still defined as committing suicide.' That Mr. Opus was shot on the way to certain death, but probably would not have been successful because of the safety net, caused the medical examiner to feel that he had a "homicide" on his hands.

The room on the 9th floor, where the shotgun blast emanated, was occupied by an elderly man and his wife. They were arguing vigorously, and he was threatening her with a shotgun! The man was so upset that when he pulled the trigger, he completely missed his wife, and the pellets went through the window, striking Mr Opus.

When one intends to kill subject 'A' but kills subject 'B' in the attempt, one is guilty of the murder of subject 'B.'

When confronted with the murder charge, the old man and his wife were both adamant, and both said that they thought the shotgun was not loaded.

The old man said it was a long standing habit to threaten his wife with the unloaded shotgun. He had no intention to murder her. Therefore the killing of Mr. Opus appeared to be an accident; that is, assuming the gun had been accidentally loaded.

The continuing investigation turned up a witness who saw the old couple's son loading the shotgun about six weeks prior to the fatal accident.

It also transpired that the old lady had cut off her son's financial support and the son, knowing the propensity of his father to use the shotgun threateningly, loaded the gun with the expectation that his father would shoot his mother.

Since the loader of the gun was aware of this, he was guilty of the murder even though he didn't actually pull the trigger. The case now becomes one of murder on the part of the son for the death of Ronald Opus.


Now comes the exquisite twist:

Further investigation revealed that the son was, in fact, Ronald Opus. He had become increasingly despondent over the failure of his attempt to engineer his mother's murder. This led him to jump off the ten-story building on March 23rd, only to be killed by a shotgun blast passing through the 9th story window.

The son, Ronald Opus, had actually murdered himself. So the medical examiner closed the case as a suicide.

Romsey Firestation visit; 1st June

Southampton Camera Club have arranged for the firemen in Romsey to put on a special hour and a half display specifically for photographers at one of the industrial estates in Romsey on Tuesday 1st June 2010 at 7.30pm.

We hope some of your members would be interested in joining us, as there needs to be a good number there to make it worthwhile - having run these events before the firemen guarantee everyone will get great photos from behind the safety cordon

The cost is a donation of £10 per head to the collection for the two fireman who lost their lives in Southampton earlier this year, you can book your place with either Terri or myself, please contact us as soon as possible if you are interested.

No commercial photography is allowed, there is car parking - but car sharing is advisable, if you want to use a tripod please be respectful to other photographers who also want good photos. There are several local pubs if everyone wants to meet up for a chat afterwards.

John Stout's ARPS success

John Stout has successfully achieved his Associateship of the royal Photographic Society on the 6th May 2010.
You can see his panel HERE
Tony Oliver accompanied John when the panel was presented for adjudication at the RPS Bath HQ.
Mike Jones the RPS Southern Regional Organiser also achieved his ARPS on his third attempt.
Both these results have to be ratified.
Salisbury Camera Club extends their congratulations to John on his achievement.

The art of photography had greatly improved during the past 180 years, while the art of photography had been developed in continents in the different level and directions. We hope that this exhibition could present the different characters of the photography in the different continents. We have received the entries from Germany, New Zealand, South Africa and Netherland, etc. We hope that more entries from the world could join it and make our conclusion be more accurate.

Roll of Honour for Rose

Last night Lynn Lambeth our Southern Federation President graced us with her presence together with her husband Roy.  Their reason for coming was to present Rose Snape with a Roll of Honour. This presentation was to honour Rose's work within our camera club for over 40 years and especially for her work on the Committee since 1964!

Art of Building

We have just launched our first photography competition in our 175 year history, entitled the ‘Art of Building’. This is a free to enter international digital photography competition (with a cash prize of £500 for the overall winner) which aims to celebrate the creativity of the industry, the passion of the people who work within it, and the impact their work has on those who make use of the final construction. That could mean architectural, portrait, landscape or even natural history photography.
The competition is open to those aged 18 and above (amateur or professional photographers) and closes on May 31st.

You will not be surprised to see that the price has risen. However, Nomad has rationalized the pricing to some extent by removing the differential between similar sizes, e.g. 2½” depth and 3” depth cost the same. I would also like to point out that Nomad do give a discount on quantity. Obviously this cannot be reflected in the price of individual boxes but any ‘profit’ is paid to the SPF, thus helping to keep Federation costs down.

Peak Photography Competition

The competition is run by Buxton Festival in collaboration with Visit Peak District. It was started by Buxton Festival five years ago and has just been re-launched with new prizes, new judges and new rules. It would be wonderful if you and some of your members were keen to enter!

There has been quite a bit of "blog" activity concerning the Digital Economy Bill now before parliament and I also attach a recent statement by the Royal Photographic Society which may alleviate concerns. The RPS have been swiftly proactive in this regard and seem to have done a good job on behalf of amateur photographers.

1st China International Digital Photographic Art Exhibition

Dear Photographer friends:

Digital technology brings great changes to the photography. Take photos is no longer as patent to a few people, it has involved in the daily live of all the people. Every perfect second could be “ exposure” and recorded.
As the first Town of Photography in China, own the first photography museum in China which is the unique photography museum sponsored by government, Li Shui city has the top-ranking photography exchange platform and image resource. “ Vision image- Lishui Photo” website (www.lsphoto.org) and “Lishui Photography” magazine are set up base on these resources. Now, they together with other professional photography media organizations will hold “The 1st China International Digital Photographic Art Exhibition” which will provide more exchange chances to the photographers all over the world and promote the development of photography.
We sincerely invite all photographic organizations, professional and amateur photographers and young photographers from all over the world to submit entries to “The 1st China International Digital Photographic Art Exhibition”.
100 works will be accepted and 28 works will be awarded.
1) The photographers who have won the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal will be invited to the awarding and opening ceremony of the exhibition and have a photo creation in China for one week. The organizer will bear the expenses including food, accommodation and transfer of the visitors during their stay in Lishui city, Zhe Jiang province. While the international travel fee between home and Lishui City has to be paid by the winners.
2) All the accepted works will be exhibited during the 2011 Lishui China International Photographic Art Festival which could be said the largest photographic festival in China. All the entrants could also be invited to attend the festival, while all the fees have be born by themselves.
3) Each entrant whose print(s) is/are accepted will receive relevant “ Vision image- Lishui Photo” website certificate. All the entrants will receive an attractive digital catalogue.
4) All the accepted works will be Collected by Photography Museum of Lishui China, which is the first photography museum in China. “Lishui Photography” magazine will also publish the awarded works and will introduce the attracted photographers no matter he/her was awarded or not.
5) With the permission of entrant, the organization committee will help to send the works to attend the 2011 China 14th International Photographic Art Exhibition which received the patronage of FIAP. You could found the detail about the past exhibitions from the website: http://world.cpanet.cn.

I write to alert you to a new photography competition, that members of your photography club may be interested in applying to. I am pleased to enclose a flyer and an A4 poster, providing further details, an entry form and example imagery. We would be most grateful if you would distribute the details to members of your photography club and encourage them to apply. It would also be much appreciated if you could also display the poster at the venue in which you hold club meetings.

The University of Cardiff and Graphic Science Ltd , with support from EPSRC (the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) are running a photography competition for all UK residents, designed to engage people with and celebrate the applications of engineering to health and quality of life.

The competition is free to enter for all UK residents. The winning entry will receive a £1000 cash prize, with runner up prizes of £500. The competition closes on 31st May 2010.

Show us how developments in engineering have impacted your quality of life: from ensuring the health and safety of you and your family, increasing the ease with which you enjoy your lifestyle or through enhancing your sports performance. You don't need scientific knowledge or engineering expertise to enter this competition. Anybody can take part. We want you to look within your own lives and find out what the applications of engineering research mean to you and how they have impacted your lifestyle.

Entrants can submit their images under five categories:

* Most creative interpretation of the brief
* Best technical image
* Best manipulated image
* Best picture taken on a mobile phone
* Under 16s.

DIGITAL AUDIO VISUAL A FORTHCOMING EVENT

On Friday the 15th of April 2011 we will be hosting a Digital Audio Visual Competition.

It will be run on similar lines to that of our adjoining region.
We have been able to secure as judges Maureen & Robert Albright. F.R.P.S. who are well known International and Regional D.A.V. makers.

1. They will comment after each sequence, and jointly pick the 1st, 2nd, 3rd.
2. The basic information is that a Sequence to be no longer than 5.miniutes long. 
3. Each club can submit 1 to 4 sequences in an order of preference. 
4. Only one sequence per author or joint authors. 
5. Due to the limitations of time the entry from each club may be reduced for Judging as equally as possible. 
6. There will be a limit of 20 clubs being able to participate. 
7. There is NO FEE for Entry or for the Judging since this is a fully Sponsored event to find out the interest within the Federation. 

Further details will be announced next season.

Landscape Workshop in the Peak District in April

This will be an amazing and different approach to landscape photography. Paul Hill was my tutor when I did my MA Photography and Martin Shakeshaft was on the course and did some really good work - different approach and good quality. Nick Lockett also lectured on the course.

The Club had a very successful evening seeing how members interpreted 3 images by the use of Photoshop.  Thye were allowed to use any technique they wished and to add images from their own stock.

We shall have scored a total of 9 points for the prints and a woeful 7 points for the PDIs. Bournemouth by comparison scored 15 for both categories.

This is a very special event for us that we want to share with other interested photographers.
Phil and Gwen are two of the founding members of Wigan 10 Foto Club who in 2007 became the first FIAP World Cup Champions.

With over 500 awards in photo exhibitions, Phil and Gwen have both sat on the distinction panels of the Royal Photographic Society and have judged many International photographic salons. Their professional career is in Commercial and Travel photography; they also now run photographic workshops. They are perhaps best known, however, for their creative work.

Viewfinders of Romsey will be welcoming Donald Bradshaw to the Jubilee Hall in Timsbury on March 23rd to give one of his exciting presentations. As most of you will already know, Donald has travelled extensively around the world and has compiled a number of lectures in different locations, using his stunning images of the wildlife, landscapes and people.
This one gives an insight into the landscape and wildlife of Madagascar, and should be a fascinating evening, including of course images of the lemur which is unique to the island.
