Mesage from The SPF to You

With the development and expansion of the SPF web-site (www.southernfed.org.uk)
your Council feels that it is no longer appropriate to continue to publish a separate Newsletter.

However, in order to alert clubs to ongoing new information, we will from time to time e-mail all clubs with a summary of significant issues from the web-site, along with the appropriate links to access the details. We hope you will help this to reach all club members in the SPF, by copying this e-mail to all your members.

So, to kick things off for the new season, here are a few headlines:
1. The SPF Leagues for 2011-12 are now sorted out; for tables and fixture lists and other details see http://www.southernfed.org.uk/league.htm All of the PDI entries for last season have now been added to the web-site in a set of galleries starting at http://www.southernfed.org.uk/leaguegallery1.htm ..well worth a look!

2. The SPF Exhibition in January 2012 will again be held in Salisbury. Entry for prints ( but not PDIs) is now closed. See http://www.southernfed.org.uk/exhibition2011.htm for full details

3. There is an important change in the PAGB standard mileage rate..up to 30p per mile plus fuel cost. See http://www.southernfed.org.uk/data/pagbrates20110426.pdf

4. Other than these key issues, there's lots of other information on the web-site, including RPS and PAGB Awards, PAGB Print Exhibition report http://www.southernfed.org.uk/pagbexhibition.htm, listing of upcoming events, minutes of Reps Meeting http://www.southernfed.org.uk/pagbexhibition.htm ( reminder: next Reps meeting is this coming Friday and much more.

5. Finally, I have been asked to bring to your attention a competition organised by The ESRC Centre for Population Change (CPC), based at the Universities of Southampton and St Andrews.

The UN predicts that on the 31st of October 2011 the population of the world will reach 7 billion.
The theme of the competition is:'What Does Living in a World of 7 Billion Mean to You?'

Photo submissions can be anything that in the author’s opinion, answers this. The competition is free to enter. Selected photographs will be displayed in a presentation at the ‘World at 7 Billion’ seminar to be held in London on the 31st October 2011. The closing date is 14th October 2011

More Club History

There are two new galleries showing some interesting snippets of events in the Club in the past.
  1. At one time we had an exhibition in the Library in Amesbury. The date is unknown - unless you know better? Find this HERE
  2. The next item is some pictures that were in a postal competition over 100 years ago. The interesting part is the critiques that came with the images. The remarks are amazingly similar to those we hear today. Read these HERE
  3. Note in the above gallery is a single photo taken in 1946 of an exhibition. Where was this held? Does anyone recognise the room? Let me if you do please.

Newsheet for September

1. The club are planning to hold an exhibition in the Guildhall on January 23rd-27th 2012. We expect to be able to exhibit approximately 100 of your images to the public (exact numbers will be known nearer the date). All exhibited images must be mounted and framed to maximise the visual impact (again exact details will be given later). There is no need to do anything at the moment other than note the dates and perhaps give some thought to providing an entry for the exhibition.

2. Set subject title "Natural History"

As you are aware the first PDI set subject this season is Natural History. In order to clarify what is acceptable and to avoid confusion in this specific area of photography, the RPS/SPF definition is outlined below.

  • Images can be of any branch of natural history except anthropology and archaeology.
  • No photos of artificially produced plants, mounted specimens or wildlife in captivity are allowed.
  • Human elements should not normally be present unless they are necessary to enhance the photos story.
  • No digital manipulation allowed that alters the truth of the image.

Tony Oliver Competition Secretary.

Competition Image Selection

The club initially require the following number of prints and PDI’s for competition and exhibition this season. We would like as many members as possible to submit work for consideration.

SPF League 8 Prints, 8 PDI’s

SPF Exhibition 6 Prints, 8 PDI’s

Monday Club 10 Prints, 10 PDI’s

There will be further matches/exhibitions during the year when image selection will be made nearer the date.

The Selection Committee will make the selection by the end of September in order to return the entry details by the required date. To facilitate this all work must be submitted on or before Monday 27th September (to include images from the first bi-monthly.)

The following criteria will be used for the initial selection process.

Prints: All members are invited to submit up to 5 mounted prints for consideration. These can be new work or previously unselected work from last year. Prints should ideally be on 500mm x 400mm mountboards.

PDI’s: All members are invited to submit up to 5 digital image files for consideration. These can be new work or previously unselected work from last year.

The selection committee may also ask to see specific work not submitted as above that they would also like to consider (e.g. known competition / Fools 100 images).

Prints should be given to Tony Oliver by the above submission date. PDI's should be given to Richard Temlett by the same date. These can be e-mailed to him (preferable), or submitted on a CD or memory stick. PDI's should not exceed the following dimensions 1400 (W) x 1050 (H) pixels and should be submitted as JPEGs in the Srgb colour space.

These events are an opportunity to show the best work of our club members. In order to do this we need your best images. If you have any queries please let me know.
Thank you.

Tony Oliver Competition Secretary

Wildlife Photographer of the Year

The City Council is delighted to bring to Salisbury the nationally and internationally acclaimed Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition, which showcases the very best in Wildlife Photography from across the globe. It is an international leader in the artistic representation of the natural world and a competition that photographers worldwide aspire to.

The exhibition, which is organised by The Natural History Museum in London, will run from 20 July – 17 August in the stunning setting of the Banqueting Hall within Salisbury Guildhall.

Exhibition highlights include, the much coveted title of Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year awarded to Hungarian photographer Bence Máté for his image A marvel of ants, a simple shot that captures the complexity of the behaviour of leaf-cutter ants in the Costa Rican rainforest. Máté is clearly a master of his craft with an artist’s eye. Fergus Gill from Scotland was crowned Veolia Environnement Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year for the second year in a row. His image of a fieldfare, The frozen moment, was judged to be the most memorable of all the pictures by photographers aged 17 or under.

Claire Burden, said, “This is an amazing exhibition and a real coup for Salisbury, to coincide with the exhibition we are planning a series of events to complement the theme. Check out our website for details of photography workshops in conjunction with Trinity Photography and other organisations. The exhibition will certainly appeal to keen photographers and wildlife lovers alike.”

big butterfly count. 13th to 31st July

We had a Butterfly Walk on Monday evening as you know.
Meanwhile from the the 16th to the 31st of July is the
big butterfly count.
The big butterfly count is a nationwide survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and an impressive 10,000 people took part, counting 210,000 butterflies and day-flying moths across the nation. We hope that many more people will join this year's big butterfly count (16th-31st July 2011).
To take part simply note down the butterflies you see during a 15 minute period and email the result.
See http://www.bigbutterflycount.org/about for more details.

Summer 99

A message from Sarah Shelly. Fools100 was great fun and extending it and getting new people doing a similar thing is a great idea.
Hi everyone,

As we get to the end of this project, I find myself reluctant to stop, so I have decided to carry on. I find it easier to work towards a goal so will aim for another 100. I thought that 'A Summer 99' (plus one for luck of course to make up a nice round number!) conjures up a hot summer and my favourite ice-cream as hopefully we still have plenty more of both to come!

So I am going to set up a Summer 99 flickr page to start from 10 July and would like to invite anyone who wishes to come and join in.

It would be nice if we could get new people as well. If anyone has friends or relatives who may want to join in that would be good; my sister will be joining us this time as well.

The system will be the same as before, send an email to the site to be accepted and then off you go. I know a few people have already said they might want to carry on, so come and join in the fun of a Summer 99!!

love Sarah
