Salisbury Carnival 25th Oct
Salisbury’s illuminated carnival is set to return on Friday 25 October at 7.30pm and organisers are now encouraging everyone to enter.
Following on from previous years the Carnival will begin at 7.30pm from Salisbury Coach Park and following the regular route of Castle Street, Blue Boar Row, Queen Street, New Canal, High Street, Bridge Street and Fisherton Street.
Large illuminated floats will be interspersed with a wide range of walking groups, bands, floats, and vintage steam driven vehicles. This year sees four classes: Best Float (Community entry), Best Walking entry (Individuals, pairs or groups), Best Decorated Business entry, and Best Steam entry. The Carnival will also welcome entries from the Wessex Carnival Circuit and Steam Engines.
As part of the carnival festivities there will be entertainment in the Guildhall Square from
3 – 9pm. Salisbury City Council would like to hear from any carnival acts/performers, on their entry form, who would like to be part of this entertainment ensuring a fun afternoon and evening for all the family.

Print Box Orders

The closing date for the next order of Nomad Print Boxes will be Friday 1st November. They should be available for collection at the Reps Meeting (AGM) on Monday 11th November. (or by arrangement)
Nomad describe these boxes as Heavy Duty in that they have two webbing straps and moulded black plastic corners. Please note that I am no longer offering the half sizes. (2.5'' & 3.5'') Now that they are the same price as the next full size up, very few of you are ordering them. Obviously I shall continue to offer the 1⅝'' size because this is the box we all use for our club competition, league and exhibition panels.
Nomad do give us a discount on quantity. Obviously this cannot be reflected in the prices of individual boxes but any ‘profit’ is paid to the SPF, thus helping keep Federation costs down.
If you are considering ordering 6 inch deep boxes, please bear in mind that they are a substantial weight when filled.

Hi to one and all.
I have been asked to see if there would be enough support to run an event at Barrow Hill Round House ahead of "Barrow Hill Live", this private photo shoot would be on evening of Wednesday the 25th of this month. This would be a night shoot and would include Mallard, Tornado and the B1 (from the NYMR) outside the Shed and then inside we will have available to the Half Cab, Blue Peter, Butler Henderson and one or two others. With it being such short notice there will be little opportunity to move loco's around the yard/shed but with some good lighting (provided by Jason Cross) and some re-enactors we could make up for this with some nicely posed cameo scenes. We will be able to create smoke to add to the scene. Tornado will be in steam, the B1 should be in light steam as well. Dare I also mention that on the opposite side of the Round House Turntable there are a variety of heritage Diesel and Electric Loco's that you may find of interest, Jason will undoubtedly put some of these under the spotlights as well.
If you are interested in supporting this event the cost will be £35.00 per person, with all profits going to Barrow Hill.

I have been given the opportunity of organising an outdoor Bridal and Fashion shoot at the lovely location of Hamptworth Lodge – a privately owned historic house, on Sunday 22nd September in the afternoon.
I need at least 10 photographers to attend to make it financially viable and so I was wondering if any of your members would be interested in attending. It is suitable to all levels of experience and if I get sufficient bookings we will have 3 models and a make-up artist in attendance. Maximum number of photographers is limited to 12 to ensure plenty of opportunity for everyone to shoot. We will be there for a minimum of 3 hours!
Please see the attached flier for more information. I can also be contacted if you would like more information or if anyone would like to make a booking. Payment can be by card, cheque or bank transfer.
This is a unique opportunity with this location, and we will have sole access to the grounds for this shoot. So, as numbers are limited, I recommend booking soon as I will be passing this flier around to local groups, as well as my regular workshop attendees.

World's largest photography contest comes to the UK!
September is the month when summer begins drawing to a close, the football season is in full swing and the leaves begin to change colour. You may not be aware that it's also the month of the world's largest photography competition.
Wiki Loves Monuments is a global competition, open to everyone. In the UK the aim is to gather together freely-licensed high quality photographs of the UK's listed buildings for use on Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. And it's open to everybody.
Wikipedia has a global audience of over 500 million people every month, making Wiki Loves Monuments a chance for entrants to have their photography potentially reach a very large audience. For example, the article about Hadrian's Wall receives around 700,000 visitors a year while the article about London is viewed around 4.5 million times a year.
Aside from being great fun, Wiki Loves Monuments is a way of capturing a snapshot of our nation’s cultural heritage for future generations, documenting our country’s most important historic buildings. Over time, the collections gathered throughout the competition will become an incredibly useful historical resource.
Entries can be images taken specially for the competition, or can be pre-existing images.
Michael Maggs, volunteer member of the Wiki Loves Monuments UK steering committee and a Wikimedia UK Trustee, said: “The contest is a great way not only to contribute to Wikipedia but also to record and share with the world images of your local historic environment. You don't need to be a professional-quality photographer to upload photos and help make a difference.”
Jon Davies, Chief Executive of Wikimedia UK, the charity that is helping to support the initiative, said: "Taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments for the first time is very exciting. We’re hoping that the UK will provide a leading contribution to the contest and are calling on photographers, amateur and professional alike, to help to make this happen. On Tuesday 22 October, we have “An Evening with Will Cheung”, an entertaining talk by the well-known editor of Advanced Photography.

Tibetan Monks to create sculpture in Chapter House

Tibetan monks from the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery will be in Salisbury Cathedral Chapter House from 9.30am – 4.30pm on Monday 30 September through to Friday 4 October creating a Sand Mandala. The process begins on Monday morning with a dedication ceremony and ends five days later with a destruction ceremony and procession to the River Avon. Visitors are welcome in the Chapter House at any time during these five days to watch the monks as they work.
The Sand Mandala is an artistic tradition of Tibetan Buddhism involving the creation and destruction of mandalas made from colored sand. A mandala is a symbolic picture of the universe representing an imaginary palace that is contemplated during meditation. Each object in the palace has significance as an aspect of wisdom or a guiding principle. Its purpose is to help transform ordinary minds into enlightened ones and to assist with healing.
The mandala is painstakingly laid using millions of grains of different coloured sand applied using small tubes, funnels, and scrapers, until the intricate pattern is achieved. It is usual that a team of monks works together on the project, creating one section at a time and working from the centre outwards. Once completed and the accompanying ceremonies and viewing are finished, the sand mandala is ritualistically destroyed - symbolising the Buddhist doctrinal belief in the transitory nature of material life - and the sand swept up and poured into a river where its healing energies are carried throughout the world. This ceremony will take place during the afternoon of Friday 4 October.
Edward Probert, Canon Chancellor at Salisbury Cathedral, said “I visited the Tashi Lhunpo monastery in February, and was privileged to enjoy the monks’ hospitality and sit in on their worship. It will be a delight to return the compliment, and while Buddhist beliefs are very different from our Christian ones, it is deeply enriching to experience their artistic and devotional traditions. Sand mandalas - the monks made one here as part of the Salisbury International Arts Festival in 2005 - are beautiful and astonishing, and throw a fresh light on the art and architecture of the cathedral's Chapter House. Please don't miss it.”

About David Yates: Dave started photography in 1992, has been President of Smethwick PS on 2 occasions,is a trustee of the Society and Chairman of the London Salon since 2010 (only the 3rd person in its 100 year history to serve 2 terms). He works mainly in Black & White producing prints from both digital files and darkroom. In the last few years since being sponsored by Fotospeed he has ventured into the colour world, but with a difference. This brings both mono and colour to the audience. His images cover a wide range of subjects taken from around the World. In 2012 he was fortunate enough to have 2 exhibitions in the UK, one being an invite to exhibit at The London Film Museum in Covent Garden alongside the London Salon Exhibition and Magnum. Photographic opportunities will abound as we travel by 4x4 from the vibrance of the city to mountain villages and desert wilderness. Doug Allan - Life Behind the Lens Tour - Sun, 13 Oct 2013, 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
Following the recent success of three Theatre tours, we have just finished organising a Third tour for BAFTA and Emmy award-winning wildlife and documentary cameraman Doug Allan. Soon he will be in Salisbury at the Arts Centre.
Having worked on programmes including Blue Planet, Planet Earth and Life, Doug is at the forefront of his profession and offers a unique insight into a life lived at the extremes. Most recently, Doug has appeared both in front of the camera, and as a cameraman for BBC's Operation Iceberg, and has also featured on the BBC's Wild Cameramen at Work, where Sir David Attenborough said the following about him: “For me, wildlife cameramen don’t come much more special than Doug. There’s just no one else who knows these frozen worlds as he does”.
The lecture has a focus on filming in the Arctic and the Antarctic, and touches on a range of subjects - from the environmental concerns of the delicate environments of the poles, and how the enhanced greenhouse effect affects them - to anecdotes on how Doug first managed to get into the business.
We believe that this lecture could be of interest to those of you who are interested in the outdoors and the environment, but also those of you interested in photography and camera work. Even if you just like a good story we feel this show will be of interest to you.
At the end of the lecture, Doug also involves the audience with a Q & A, and then comes down off of the stage, to sign copies of his book, and will be able to discuss a couple of points whilst signing.
With a lecture full of Doug's exciting adventures and animal encounters, it should be fun for those of all ages.

RPS Digital Imaging Group Exhibition
Digital Imaging Group Exhibition of Award Winning Images, Fenton House - August 2013
This month’s exhibition of members’ work at Fenton House in Bath is the Digital Imaging Group Exhibition of Award Winning Images.
It shows the Gold Medal and Ribbon winning images from the 2012 Print Exhibition, the 2012 Digital Projected Image Competition (DPIC) and the 2013 Print Exhibition; as well as the Gold Medal winning images from the 2010 DPIC, the 2011 Print Exhibition and the 2011 DPIC. As such, it represents a cross-section of the best work of DIG members.
The Exhibition is on until 29th August. Opening times are Monday – Friday. 9.30 – 16.30 and entry is free.

Winchester Cycle Race - Sunday 11th Aug
'There is a high-quality cycle race in Winchester on the 11th of August. The route is around Winchester town and runs up the High Street. It's between 4pm and 8pm. The details can be found on the Winchester City Council website. It will make for good photographs.'

Lancaster Just Jane, 10th of August
Hi to one and all.
Just a quick note to say we still have a few places left on the Lancaster shoot. The event includes a taxi run, other associated vehicles, a night shoot and re-enactors. There is even seats available (at extra cost) for anyone wishing to take in the thrill of riding inside Just Jane during her taxi run. This is a very unique opportunity to photograph one of Bomber Commands finest planes unrestricted and in as close to a WWII environment as possible.
If you are interested in join us for this event please let me know by email before sending your booking to David. You can also use Paypal Personal Payment if that is easier, just use this email address to send the payment.
I hope some of you will now consider joining us for a great evening of photography at East Kirkby and in turn your support will help get Just Jane back in the air. I am lead to understand this could happen during 2015, let hope so.

PDI Images urgently needed
Please send a plea out to all members to send in their winning images - this is for individuals, not a club entry. We need work for both the Open class and Natural History class.
All images must be a maximum of; 1400 pixels horizontal x 1050 pixels vertical, ; RGB mode; jpeg format.
All images must be sent to pagb.competition@southerncontiespf.org.uk by September 1st, slightly earlier this year than last.
Remember images must not have been accepted in the exhibition in either print or PDI previously and a club member can only support one federation.
I would also like to advise you that Ian Miller has now taken over as PAGB Competition Secretary and I hope you will continue to support Ian's requests as you have mine over the last couple of years.
Remember the more images we have to choose from the more likely we are to get images accepted and come higher in the ranking list. We did well last year coming 5th place - lets try to improve that.

FSC UK 2013 Photography Competition Launched
Dear Photographic Club / Society,
I am getting in touch to let you know that we have now launched our 2013 FSC UK photography competition! We are, once again, inviting entrants to submit photos taken in FSC certified forests or of FSC certified products and there are three categories from which to choose: Timber, People and Wildlife.
Entries will be judged by our esteemed panel of judges: Edward Parker (Environmental Photographer), Ray Hawes (Head of Forestry at The National Trust) and Greg Armfield (Head of Photography at WWF) and photos must be submitted by Friday 27th September. The winner and runner up in each category, as decided by the judges, will further be entered into a public vote.
Prizes include tuition by Edward Parker, a Go Ape family ticket (worth £100), Forestry Commission Discovery Passes and FSC goody bags.
Please remember that photos must be taken in FSC certified forests or of FSC certified products.

This year again, we want to ensure we communicate the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards competition to your members. We don’t want them to miss this opportunity!
As you already know the awards is free to enter and offer the shortlisted and winners photographers tremendous global exposure for their work. Last year, the awards received over 19 millions worth of press coverage in print and online and the exhibition welcomed over 23,000 visitors in only three weeks.
The 2014 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition will take place at Somerset House from the 1st to the 18th of May 2014.
As you already know the awards is free to enter and offer the shortlisted and winners photographers tremendous global exposure for their work. Chichester Camera Club's 64th annual exhibition
Hello from Chichester.
The Chichester Camera Club's 64th annual exhibition of its members' work will take place from August 10th, 2013 through to August 17th, 2013 (with the exception of Sunday, August 11th). It will be held, as usual, in the Assembly Rooms on North Street in Chichester and will be open between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. We would like to invite members of your Club to drop by and see our work if they are in Chichester during the exhibition. They will receive a warm welcome. Would you please, if possible, distribute the attached poster or otherwise get this news out to your club's members? Thanks.
The opening of the exhibition will be held on the evening of Friday, August 9th, 2013. We would like to invite up to 4 members of your Club to join us for the opening ceremonies, a light buffet and a viewing of the show. The doors will open at 7:00 pm for a 7:30 programme start.

Viewfinders of Romsey CC exhibition - 27th & 28th July
Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club's annual exhibition on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July. Admission is free. This will again be held at King John's House in Romsey, a beautiful and historic building in the centre of Romsey, which is well worth a look in its own right.

Moving On July Challenge - The dark side.
The challenge for July is all about low key lighting.
In renaissance painting, low key lighting is known as chiaroscuro (Italian for light - dark) and many famous painters have used this technique including Caravaggio and Rembrandt.
Whereas a high key image is light and airy, a low-key image is all about drama and mystery. You are aiming for moody with striking contrasts through reduced lighting, so shadows are key to this.
So what does this actually mean you need to do? Well you are looking for an image that is likely to have one main direction of light source. The easiest example is to imagine a person in a darkened room, with just a candle to light their face. That is the sort of look you are going for. However, it can be any subject and it can be day or night, the technique can be subtle or dramatic. It can be colour or mono, it is up to you.
It might help to look on the internet to see the sort of thing we are talking about and the Wikipedia page on chiaroscuro contains some good information on the subject and lists some photographers who are known for its use. Also see HERE and maybe this Google Image page
