Environmental Photographer of the Year 2010

It’s nearly that time again – only a few weeks left before we close the Environmental Photographer of the Year for another year.

As always, we appreciate the enormous help you provide through telling your contacts, friends and colleagues about the competition, so would really appreciate you reminding them that the deadline for entries is 31st July 2010.

The categories are:
Changing Climates
The Natural World
Quality of Life
Innovation in the Environment (New for 2010)
The Underwater World (New for 2010)
A View From the Western World (New for 2010)
Young Environmental Photographer of the Year (Under 16 & Under 21)

Winners share a prize fund of £5,000, and all winning and highly commended entries are displayed in the free Environmental Photographer of the Year exhibition – to be launched on 25th October in Mayfair, London. Copyright is retained by the photographer.

Romsey Firestation visit; 1st June

Southampton Camera Club have arranged for the firemen in Romsey to put on a special hour and a half display specifically for photographers at one of the industrial estates in Romsey on Tuesday 1st June 2010 at 7.30pm.

We hope some of your members would be interested in joining us, as there needs to be a good number there to make it worthwhile - having run these events before the firemen guarantee everyone will get great photos from behind the safety cordon

The cost is a donation of £10 per head to the collection for the two fireman who lost their lives in Southampton earlier this year, you can book your place with either Terri or myself, please contact us as soon as possible if you are interested.

No commercial photography is allowed, there is car parking - but car sharing is advisable, if you want to use a tripod please be respectful to other photographers who also want good photos. There are several local pubs if everyone wants to meet up for a chat afterwards.

Walk via Art Centre, Council Grounds, Wyndham Rd. Castle Rd. Nelson Rd. River Avon walk, St. Thomas' Church, Market Sq. Winchester St. Greencroft.

Re-assemble Salt Lane Car Park approx 8.30 p.m.

Chat and a Drink in the Pheasant Inn to finish the season.

Studio in Wilton for hire

I have recently opened a new 400sq ft studio in Wilton and will be offering it out to societies and clubs at reduced rates. It can be hired with or without lighting and is available evenings and weekends as well as normal opening hours. John Stout's ARPS success

John Stout has successfully achieved his Associateship of the royal Photographic Society on the 6th May 2010.
You can see his panel HERE
Tony Oliver accompanied John when the panel was presented for adjudication at the RPS Bath HQ.
Mike Jones the RPS Southern Regional Organiser also achieved his ARPS on his third attempt.
Both these results have to be ratified.
Salisbury Camera Club extends their congratulations to John on his achievement.

Roll of Honour for Rose

Last night Lynn Lambeth our Southern Federation President graced us with her presence together with her husband Roy.  Their reason for coming was to present Rose Snape with a Roll of Honour. This presentation was to honour Rose's work within our camera club for over 40 years and especially for her work on the Committee since 1964!

Art of Building

We have just launched our first photography competition in our 175 year history, entitled the ‘Art of Building’. This is a free to enter international digital photography competition (with a cash prize of £500 for the overall winner) which aims to celebrate the creativity of the industry, the passion of the people who work within it, and the impact their work has on those who make use of the final construction. That could mean architectural, portrait, landscape or even natural history photography.
The competition is open to those aged 18 and above (amateur or professional photographers) and closes on May 31st.

Your Invitation to our Grand Open Day at Coutts

The closing date for the next order for PRINT BOXES is SATURDAY, 27th MARCH 2010.

I expect that the boxes will be available for collection at the Club Reps meeting in May or possibly at Finals Day on 18th April.

You will not be surprised to see that the price has risen. However, Nomad has rationalized the pricing to some extent by removing the differential between similar sizes, e.g. 2½” depth and 3” depth cost the same. I would also like to point out that Nomad do give a discount on quantity. Obviously this cannot be reflected in the price of individual boxes but any ‘profit’ is paid to the SPF, thus helping to keep Federation costs down.

There has been quite a bit of "blog" activity concerning the Digital Economy Bill now before parliament and I also attach a recent statement by the Royal Photographic Society which may alleviate concerns. The RPS have been swiftly proactive in this regard and seem to have done a good job on behalf of amateur photographers.

1st China International Digital Photographic Art Exhibition

Dear Photographer friends:
Digital technology brings great changes to the photography. Take photos is no longer as patent to a few people, it has involved in the daily live of all the people. Every perfect second could be “ exposure” and recorded.
As the first Town of Photography in China, own the first photography museum in China which is the unique photography museum sponsored by government, Li Shui city has the top-ranking photography exchange platform and image resource. “ Vision image- Lishui Photo” website (www.lsphoto.org) and “Lishui Photography” magazine are set up base on these resources. Now, they together with other professional photography media organizations will hold “The 1st China International Digital Photographic Art Exhibition” which will provide more exchange chances to the photographers all over the world and promote the development of photography.
We sincerely invite all photographic organizations, professional and amateur photographers and young photographers from all over the world to submit entries to “The 1st China International Digital Photographic Art Exhibition”.
100 works will be accepted and 28 works will be awarded.
1) The photographers who have won the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal will be invited to the awarding and opening ceremony of the exhibition and have a photo creation in China for one week. The organizer will bear the expenses including food, accommodation and transfer of the visitors during their stay in Lishui city, Zhe Jiang province. While the international travel fee between home and Lishui City has to be paid by the winners.
2) All the accepted works will be exhibited during the 2011 Lishui China International Photographic Art Festival which could be said the largest photographic festival in China. All the entrants could also be invited to attend the festival, while all the fees have be born by themselves.
3) Each entrant whose print(s) is/are accepted will receive relevant “ Vision image- Lishui Photo” website certificate. All the entrants will receive an attractive digital catalogue.
4) All the accepted works will be Collected by Photography Museum of Lishui China, which is the first photography museum in China. “Lishui Photography” magazine will also publish the awarded works and will introduce the attracted photographers no matter he/her was awarded or not.
5) With the permission of entrant, the organization committee will help to send the works to attend the 2011 China 14th International Photographic Art Exhibition which received the patronage of FIAP. You could found the detail about the past exhibitions from the website: http://world.cpanet.cn.

ENGINEERING FOR LIFE: UK Photography Competition

I write to alert you to a new photography competition, that members of your photography club may be interested in applying to. I am pleased to enclose a flyer and an A4 poster, providing further details, an entry form and example imagery. We would be most grateful if you would distribute the details to members of your photography club and encourage them to apply. It would also be much appreciated if you could also display the poster at the venue in which you hold club meetings.

The University of Cardiff and Graphic Science Ltd , with support from EPSRC (the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) are running a photography competition for all UK residents, designed to engage people with and celebrate the applications of engineering to health and quality of life.

The competition is free to enter for all UK residents. The winning entry will receive a £1000 cash prize, with runner up prizes of £500. The competition closes on 31st May 2010.

Show us how developments in engineering have impacted your quality of life: from ensuring the health and safety of you and your family, increasing the ease with which you enjoy your lifestyle or through enhancing your sports performance. You don't need scientific knowledge or engineering expertise to enter this competition. Anybody can take part. We want you to look within your own lives and find out what the applications of engineering research mean to you and how they have impacted your lifestyle.

Entrants can submit their images under five categories:

* Most creative interpretation of the brief
* Best technical image
* Best manipulated image
* Best picture taken on a mobile phone
* Under 16s.

DIGITAL AUDIO VISUAL 15th April 2011

DIGITAL AUDIO VISUAL A FORTHCOMING EVENT

On Friday the 15th of April 2011 we will be hosting a Digital Audio Visual Competition.

It will be run on similar lines to that of our adjoining region.
We have been able to secure as judges Maureen & Robert Albright. F.R.P.S. who are well known International and Regional D.A.V. makers.
  1. They will comment after each sequence, and jointly pick the 1st, 2nd, 3rd.
  2. The basic information is that a Sequence to be no longer than 5.miniutes long. 
  3. Each club can submit 1 to 4 sequences in an order of preference. 
  4. Only one sequence per author or joint authors. 
  5. Due to the limitations of time the entry from each club may be reduced for Judging as equally as possible. 
  6. There will be a limit of 20 clubs being able to participate. 
  7. There is NO FEE for Entry or for the Judging since this is a fully Sponsored event to find out the interest within the Federation. 
Further details will be announced next season.

This will be an amazing and different approach to landscape photography. Paul Hill was my tutor when I did my MA Photography and Martin Shakeshaft was on the course and did some really good work - different approach and good quality. Nick Lockett also lectured on the course.

This table is quite hard to follow. Where there are zeros a match has yet to be played or the score is not inserted.
We shall have scored a total of 9 points for the prints and a woeful 7 points for the PDIs. Bournemouth by comparison scored 15 for both categories.

This is a very special event for us that we want to share with other interested photographers.
Phil and Gwen are two of the founding members of Wigan 10 Foto Club who in 2007 became the first FIAP World Cup Champions.
With over 500 awards in photo exhibitions, Phil and Gwen have both sat on the distinction panels of the Royal Photographic Society and have judged many International photographic salons. Their professional career is in Commercial and Travel photography; they also now run photographic workshops. They are perhaps best known, however, for their creative work.

Viewfinders of Romsey will be welcoming Donald Bradshaw to the Jubilee Hall in Timsbury on March 23rd to give one of his exciting presentations. As most of you will already know, Donald has travelled extensively around the world and has compiled a number of lectures in different locations, using his stunning images of the wildlife, landscapes and people.
This one gives an insight into the landscape and wildlife of Madagascar, and should be a fascinating evening, including of course images of the lemur which is unique to the island.

The Winchester Photographic Society Annual Open Exhibition

Winchester Photographic Society's 77th Annual Open Exhibition will be taking place between Saturday 24th April and Sunday 16th May at the City Space at Winchester Discovery Centre, Jewry Street, Winchester. We’d like to invite you to join us!
Both members and non‐members are welcome to submit entries, with the best images displayed in the exhibition.

Judging Workshop on Sunday 21st February

Have you ever sat at the back of your club during a competition and wondered how a judge judge's? Would you like to find out more, or perhaps you are brave enough to stick your head above the parapet and put yourself forward as a judge.

On Sunday 21st February 2010 at Littleton Millennium Hall, Littleton, Near Winchester SO22 6QL, the Southern Photographic Federation will be hosting a Judging Workshop at 11:15 for 11:30am. Tickets will be available on the door at £8 each, everyone is welcome - if you are a current SPF Judge you are invited to attend for free.

Please bring a packed lunch with you, we will break for lunch, however there are not many places locally for food.

If you would like to be assessed during the day, to become an SPF B Panel Judge, please let me know.

We would ask you to bring along some prints and digital images - preferably not your most successful shots but ones which you know have some weaknesses, for use during the day, so that we can all learn from each others mistakes.

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to enjoy the fantastic photographs of David Boag's 'American Project'. He is a Naturalist and Wildlife Photographer of great renown and has given lectures and presentations to a large variety of Groups and Associations, including RSPB Groups, Camera Clubs and Wildlife Trusts.

The American Project is the result of a commission David undertook, but he also took the opportunity to explore some of the more remote corners, including Alaska, Florida Everglades, Grand Canyon, to mention a few! His photography captures not only the scenery but also the wildlife he encountered during the project.

The interest in the lecture is enhanced by the challenge of discovering how David works in locations so far away from home and with unfamiliar animals and plants.

He has achieved some amazing pictures of enthralling prairie dogs and chipmunks - of cold-bloodied alligators and rattlesnakes - of vibrant flowers and dramatic birds.

Southern Federation Print Championship

This is the first of the new Championship and we are delighted to announce that the P.A.G.B. has accorded us their Patronage for this event, making it even more important to enter. As well as trophies for the best Clubs in the Federation there are also Gold and Silver medals to be awarded.
As is usual for an event such as this we have secured the services of three judges well versed in the type of judging needed for this. They will be using the well tried and tested method of marking of 1 – 5 for each print entered and displayed.
We have already received 13 entries and we are looking for more Clubs to join us. The closing date for the entry forms for the Prints by the 11th March 2010. The date is not negotiable due to the complexity of work needed before the day of the judging.
It is hoped that all Clubs will make the effort and discuss with their members and decide to enter and enjoy the viewing of so many prints from across the Federation and of course the opportunity to mix with other like minded members at this social occasion.
This year the Championship is to be hosted by Highcliffe & Infinity CC; perhaps next year your club would consider this? This will give the SPF the chance to hold this Championship in another part of the region.

SPF Annual Exhibition Evening

I am pleased to be able to announce the new date for the SPF Annual Exhibition Evening, it will now be held on Friday 22nd January 2010 in the gallery Salisbury Library at 7pm. We hope that you will be able to join us, please spread the word of the new date.

Photographic Exhibition

Photographic Exhibition
Basingstoke Central Library
18th – 30th January

I wonder if any of your members might be interested in an exhibition of a small number of my photographs which I have arranged in Basingstoke Central Library later this month.

I’ve called the exhibition “ . . . looking forward to summer . . . “ and intend to put up four pictures on four separate themes - summer landscapes, people’s faces in summer and people in the Venice Carnival (after all – the Venetians really know how to dress up and chase the midwinter blues away).

However, as I sit here peering out over a snowdrift at an icy road, I didn’t realise how pertinent the fourth group would be – winter landscapes showing the effects of snow and cold weather!

Assuming I can dig myself out of Yateley and drive to Basingstoke with the pictures, the exhibition will run from Monday 18th January to Sunday 31st January.

The library’s address is 19/20 Westminster House, Festival Place, Basingstoke, RG21 7LS. It is open seven days a week from 9.30 each morning (11.00am Sundays) and generally stays open until 7pm (although it closes at 4pm Saturdays, 5pm Sundays, 5.30pm Thursdays).

At present I also have a small permanent exhibition of photographs on a travel theme in Fleet Library. The pictures in the Fleet exhibition are changed every three months or so.

Wanted - homeowners with a passion for saving energy

In an exciting new initiative, Wiltshire Council is aiming to work with a small number of homeowners in the county to show that existing homes can achieve a significant reduction in the carbon emissions that contribute to climate change.

Wiltshire Council has been successful in its bid for funding under the Target 2050 scheme. Under the scheme the selected homes will receive an in-depth energy use survey, after which an individual action plan for reducing emissions will be drawn up. Owners will get expert advice for one year to support them in carrying out their action plan.

The scheme takes its name from the government target to reduce the UK's carbon emissions by 80% by the year 2050. The homeowners taking part in Target 2050 will be selected to represent the range of homes and households in Wiltshire and will ideally be spread across the county. There are no restrictions on the types of property that will be considered, even listed buildings are eligible for consideration.

The participating households will be asked to monitor their energy use for up to two years to demonstrate the savings they achieve. Alongside the energy saving measures installed in their homes, which may be part funded through the scheme, the households will be encouraged to examine their everyday habits and choices to see how they can help to reduce the carbon footprint further. These households will also be expected to become case studies to inspire other local householders to take action.

"This is a big challenge," says Cllr John Brady , Portfolio Holder for Housing. "We are looking for people who are serious about reducing their carbon footprint and willing to be advocates for positive action on climate change within their community.”

Environmental Photographer of the Year 2010 competition

CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) runs the Environmental Photographer of the Year, which is one of the fastest growing photographic competitions in the world. In 2009 we received nearly 2,500 entries from photographers in over 60 countries.
This is a serious competition that seeks to celebrate photographers who use their ability to raise awareness of environmental and social issues. It is open to all professional and amateur international photographers of any ages and encourages entries that are contemporary, creative, experimental, resonant, original and beautiful.
The categories are:

Individual pieces of work will be judged on impact, creativity, composition, originality and technical abilities. Winners receive cash prizes, and all winning and highly commended entries are displayed in the international Environmental Photographer of the Year exhibitions. Basingstoke Camera Club Annual Projected Image Exhibition 2010

Basingstoke Camera Club Annual Projected Image Exhibition 2010 - Closing date 14 January 2010!

The Exhibition has the same format as last year, in that we're accepting digital images only. However, as before, there's no requirement that a photograph was taken with a digital camera - it could have been taken with a film camera and scanned, for example.

As for the 2009 exhibition, there are four classes you can enter - Open, Nature, Portrait and Monochrome. Please refer to the terms and conditions for the specific entry requirements for each class.

You can enter your digital images either: a) by using our exhibition online entry submission website (the preferred option), b) by email, or c) by post on CD or DVD. No matter how you choose to submit your images, you can either pay by cheque or postal order, or by using Paypal. Please note that you don't need to have or to open a Paypal account - you can simply use the Paypal service to pay by credit or debit card.

Entries received via either email or post require significantly more work to process than those received via the exhibition website. To encourage use of the latter, we’ve introduced entry fee surcharges as follows: Images sent by email: surcharge 1 pound; images sent by post: surcharge 2 pound. If you’re concerned about making payment over the internet, you can enter your images using the exhibition website and send payment separately by post, without incurring a surcharge.

Some people seem to encounter difficulties naming their images correctly when sending them via email or post. If you use the exhibition website, you do not have to worry about image naming and you will receive an email acknowledging receipt of your entry, containing thumbnails of all the images you entered.

Andy is celebrating his tenth year as a professional photographer and we are guaranteed an inspiring afternoon celebrating the wildlife of our planet. His show will be packed with his favourite images from the past ten years, complete with inspirational anecdotes and the occasional dodgy joke. He will also be showing his most recent project work from Australia and Svalbard, which will be very popular and include some incredible polar bear encounters. Those of you who have seen his shows know how inspirational they are and how much energy Andy puts into them so you are assured of a good afternoon out.  Andy will be selling signed copies of Living Landscapes, Concepts of Nature and as a special treat his first real coffee table book Life in the Wild.
The talk is at Thornden Hall, Chandlers Ford near Southampton. The theatre is an excellent venue with tiered seating and an excellent sound system, so everyone is assured of a great view of Andy’s work.

We are privileged that Charlie Waite has agreed to present an evening of his landscape photography at 7.30pm on Saturday 6th March 2010 at High Cross Church, Camberley, Surrey GU15 3SY.  More info HERE

This event is held in association with the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the club’s founding in 1935 and follows our major exhibition that took place recently in association with the Surrey Heath Museum

East Sussex Photography Workshop

Exclusively for our Club members we are arranging a photographic workshop based in Bexhill. This will be for 3 nights in a hotel that will be only for us.  So we shall have effectively 4 days to explore the region.  This will include Old Hastings, Rye Harbour, Dungeness, Romney Marshes, the Birling Gap and Seaford.
It has been specifically designed for the less experienced landscape members who wish to learn more.
The cost will be kept as low as possible. So the cost will include B&B for 3 nights but exclude most evening meals, lunch and transport.  It is suggested that we take as few cars as possible to keep costs down.
We will be going in mid April.

Mount Board

At last we have found a good local supplier of mounting card!  They are based in Netherhampton.
The card quality is first class - Daler-Rowney 1.4mm thick. There are six colours.  Five have a smooth finish and one with a textured surface.
  • For us they will precut the board to 400x500mm for the same price as their standard 20x16inch. This price starts at £1.00 up to 10 sheets.
  • If you want you can have them with a precut hole for an A3 photograph [£1.50 for 5 cards].
  • You can also buy whole sheets at £5. Size of these is 828x1235mm [or 32.25x48.75inches]. You could get 4 400x500mm cards plus some extra card about 9 inches wide and 32 inches long.
Everthing is negotiable hole, size price, card size, double mounts.
They also have a lot of end-of-run mounts.  These looked really nice. You would have to visit to find out what they have.
  • Please let Peter or Sheila know if you would like to take advantage of these prices and even better prices if we give Frith a bulk order. We will bring the colour swatch next Monday for you to choose.  We suggest that the textured version would be ideal to start off.  It is a delicate ivory white in colour.

Attention Members

The next two weeks events will not meet at the Club Venue. Instead:-

1. Monday 19th, Night photography. Meet 7.30 at Cathedral Close by the "Walking Madonna" statue (near telescope and tea room). Alternatively go straight to fair if preferred.
All meet up at 9.15 on Guildhall steps to compare notes and socialise at pub.

2. Monday 26th. Monday club at Southampton. NO CLUB EVE at our church.
Anybody wanting lift or directions let me know by Friday before pleaseand I will co-ordinate transport.

2010 Arena Seminar,12th-14th March 2010, Riviera Hotel, Bournemouth

Over the years the annual Arena Seminar has built a reputation as being probably the best seminar on photographic art and practice in the UK. Past speakers include last year's Martin Parr and Tom Stoddart, and before them other leading practitioners such as John Blakemore, Michael Busselle & Denis Thorpe.
Each year enthusiasts from the UK and beyond come to hear presentations from four leading guest speakers and two host Arena speakers. Above all, it is a great opportunity to live and breathe photography for a whole weekend with like-minded people.
Last year was judged by many as our best seminar yet, but looking at this year's provisional programme it looks like we might just surpass ourselves once again! In 2010 we have another exciting line-up of superb photographers who have been provisionally booked for the event.
David Hurn
For many years David has had an international reputation as one of the Britain's leading reportage photographers. Admitted as a full member of Magnum in 1967 he has concentrated much of his time on documenting the dramatic changes that he has witnessed taking place in Wales, where he continues to live and work.
David is also a passionate teacher and set up the famous School of Documentary Photography in Newport. He is in demand throughout the world to lecture and run photographic workshops. His presentation is entitled 'Fifty five years in photography without dying of malnutrition'!
John Swannell
One of the UK's best known photographers, John spent many years working for the likes of Vogue, Harpers and Queen, Tatler and the Sunday Times, developing a very distinctive style of fashion and beauty photography.
He has photographed the Queen for her Golden Jubilee and The Princess Royal for her 40th and 50th birthdays, as well as being commissioned by Diana, Princess of Wales to photograph her with her two children. He has held many one-man shows at prestigious galleries including the Royal Academy in Edinburgh and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
Nick Turpin
Nick is a street photographer who observes and catches that moment in time. He describes his work not as reportage, not art, nor with any great technical craft or aesthetic beauty - 'they are just pictures about life'.
For the past 12 years Nick has been shooting design and advertising projects for clients such as Toyota, Jaguar, Land Rover, VW, IBM, Barclays Bank and Vodafone. He also lectures on street photography at Tate Modern and Yale School of Art, and was recently featured on Radio 4's 'Picturing Britain' series.
Ted Humble-Smith
Ted is recognised as one of the country's leading advertising photographers, producing outstandingly creative images. His highly impressive range of clients include Heineken, Tag Heuer watches, Harrods, GQ sports magazine, Tatler magazine, Glenfiddich, McLaren F1, Chrysler, Mercedes, Sony and Pioneer.
Once an art student of our very own Tony Worobiec, Ted then spent time assisting the likes of Andy Earl. Now specialising in his passion for still life photography, Ted loves the challenge of starting each campaign with an empty studio, knowing that everything in the final image will be there because he placed it or created it. The results are quite stunning! Not surprisingly, last year he won an award with the AOP.
Leigh Preston
Leigh Preston has been involved in photography since 1980 when he joined the Ordnance Survey Photographic Society. He started working in colour slides and A/V, taking mainly landscapes and travel pictures until 1985, when monochrome work began to become an obsession. He holds two RPS Fellowships, gaining a pictorial distinction in 1988, and in 1999, a Fellowship for photographic printing. He lectures all over the U.K. at clubs /societies /seminars and in Education. A bestselling book of his monochrome images, depicting Britain's Industrial landscapes, was published in 1993. He has had several one-man exhibitions in London, Dublin, Manchester, Birmingham and Belfast. Now semi-professional, he works as a photographic printer & college lecturer.
John Chamberlin
Working in many different disciplines, John's work touches on many aspects of the natural world, from landscapes, wildlife and travel. As his many galleries on this website show, he has travelled far and wide in pursuit of his photographic interests. A skilled colour worker, his images appeal to our senses to protect our environment and pause to consider the beauty of the natural world and there's more!
We have a new, improved print review session on Saturday, the ever popular print raffle will be held, and you could take advantage of the hotel's facilities or make the most of Bournemouth town centre and beach. You can find out more about the hotel by visiting the Riviera's website.
