What you do at home is rarely a problem. If you copy music and movie clips to a film and show it to friends you have broken the law but no one is likely to find out - or to worry about it. However, to show it at a club or to another group or to use it in a competition you will need several permissions.
Copyright is recognised by Acts of Parliament – the main legislation being the Copyright, Designs & Patents Act of 1988 and subsequent amendments. The Law is designed to protect the ownership of the work of writers and composers and others to whom the creators of the work have assigned their Rights, as well as the manufacturers of sound recordings & broadcasting authorities. Note that even if a composer has been dead for 200 years and his copyright has expired the copyright to the recording is still owned by of the performers.
It is an offence
- to make a recording of Copyright music, even if that recording is not played back
- to record, or copy, any recording without the consent of the maker and or performer(s)
- to play or reproduce Copyright music in public* without the appropriate permissions
* Any group of persons outside the family circle, including friends, can be held to be “Public”.
The Institute of Amateur Cinematographers (IAC) has negotiated special arrangements with the various licensing bodies to allow them to issue licenses from these organisations.
Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS)
British Phonographic Industry (BPI)
Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL)
IAC LICENCES ARE AVAILABLE ONLY TO IAC Members and IAC Affiliated Clubs.
and by specially negotiated arrangements to The Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (MCPS and BPI only) Members of the Royal Photographic Society (MCPS and BPI only). Any of these licences in a club’s name applies only to productions made by the club nominated. They do not cover productions made by individual members on their own behalf. Similarly, licences in the name of an individual clear that person’s work only.
If you are using recorded music and you are providing AV presentations to clubs, giving shows or entering Regional, National or International AV Competitions, the PAGB believe that the purchase of the three licences listed below is essential.
In addition if you are selling the resultant AV show, as opposed to charging legitimate expenses or receiving a donation towards costs, you may have to seek permission from the Musicians’ Union. This will protect you and the organisers of the events. Many AV competitions request details of licences held by the entrant. Licences can be obtained from The IAC at the Film & Video Institute at http://www.fvi.org.uk/central/forms/Copyright_Licences
MECHANICAL COPYRIGHT PROTECTION SOCIETY (MCPS)
Protects the Rights of the Composer and permits the licensee
to record (dub) musical works owned by members of MCPS which have previously been released as a sound recording on condition that the recordings are privately used.
For exhibition to friends and relations in private
On amateur movie, photographic or video club premises where admission is free or where a charge is made for club funds.
For public exhibition when such is promoted for the raising of club funds or for bone fide charitable causes.
For not more than TWO public exhibitions held annually in addition to those in listed above.
For exhibition at annual amateur movie, photographic or video festivals attended by competitors and friends.
Exhibition to judges in amateur film, photographic or video competitions.
For inclusion, as clips and short videos, in YouTube - provided there is no financial gain and no commercial advertising is attached. Such clips may be "embedded" in IAC and club websites so long as they are hosted by YouTube.
BRITISH PHONOGRAPHIC INDUSTRY (BPI)
In normal circumstances record companies do not permit their commercial products to be re-recorded or dubbed. The BPI licence issued by IAC on their behalf permits the copying of recordings made by leading manufacturers. The BPI licence permits an unlimited number of copies of recordings to be made within the conditions of the licence during one year from its date of issue.
It should be noted that Copyright in the recording is separate from any other Copyright attached to the material recorded. Even if the material is free from any other Copyright the RECORDING itself is Copyright to the performer or the record manufacturer.
The BPI licence covers the RECORDING PROCESS of all recordings made by leading manufacturers and its conditions are as follows.
The original recording used by the licensee must be his/her personal property and purchased through regular retail channels.
The names of all instrumental groups, bands, orchestras, choruses, solo artists and/or performers shall NOT be identified in subtitles or credits etc.
All other Copyrights e.g. Composer, Performer, shall be cleared before the recordings are copied or dubbed.
That no copies of the sound tracks on which the recordings reside be used for any other purposes whatsoever.
PHONOGRAPHIC PERFORMANCE Ltd. (PPL)
A PPL licence is necessary for the REPRODUCTION IN PUBLIC of sound tracks created from commercial recordings - this licence is only available to IAC Members IAC Individual Membership costs £37.50 per annum whilst Club membership costs £40. The PPL licence allows use as the soundtrack of an AV recording and also covers the live use of recordings played as background during the entrance and as an accompaniment to film, video and audio-visual presentations that may not have a pre-recorded soundtrack.
This licence does not cover requirements that may be imposed by local authorities. IAC Licences cover material registered in Britain and you should check that music recorded abroad has been UK registered
Both the MCPS and BPI Licence can be purchased by members and clubs affiliated through Federations to the PAGB for £8.54 including VAT and clear all dubbings and recordings made within the 12 months FOR ALL TIME.
The PPL Licence is only available to members of the IAC. All three licences, MCPS, BPI and PPL can be purchased by IAC members for just £7.17 per annum including VAT.
Finding the right music and/or effects for our audio-visual presentations is probably one of the most difficult aspects of our hobby. The IAC Music Advisory Service is available to members and many people find this service in itself to be worth the membership fee. IAC has special arrangements with four production music houses who supply radio, television and the film industry with music of all types and these are available from IAC at £20 per CD. http://www.fvi.org.uk/central/moodmusic
MUSICIANS’ UNION (Performer's Rights)
Performers Rights are administered by the Musicians’ Union. Under the provisions of the Copyright, Designs & Patents Act 1988 the consent of the performers is necessary in relation to the exploitation of their performances including recorded performances.
This is in addition to all clearances and consents that have to be obtained with regard to Composer and Recording Rights.
As from August 2005 it is no longer necessary for IAC members to apply to the Musicians’ Union for performers consent for each incorporation of a sound recording into a project, provided all that is intended with that project is private use and/or exhibition to a non-paying audience.
However, any commercial exploitation will still require the prior consent of the Union In such cases, or if you have any queries, contact the Media Department of the Musicians’ Union on 020 7840 5556
The Performing Rights Society (PRS) issues licences covering commercial premises in which Copyright music is played. These are quite separate from the Copyright clearance licences issued through the IAC & will not normally be of concern to club members compiling AV shows.
SUMMARY BY PETER BROWN
For AV workers who do not give shows with music to the general public or paid lectures to photographic clubs, the two licences that can be bought under the PAGB/RPS agreement will cover them. The MCPS licence states what is covered under and also allows entry to a Federation or National competition. However membership of the IAC has other benefits that you should consider. One item that still get abused is that some AV workers still insist on putting composers or bands, even CD titles, into the credits at the end of their sequences, this is strictly against the rules of the licences. This happens in entries in National competitions.
Once you have cleared all the problems with the soundtracks, AV producers who copy pictures out of books, off the internet, or some other means, are still breaking copyright laws. Nobody seems to bother although I have seen some sequences that do not have one original photograph in them. Still no clearance has been sought. If you are infringing copyright and threatening the way that someone else makes a living you can expect an adverse reaction.
However, with a little commonsense, there is no reason why you need be handicapped in your hobby for lack of suitable music. Be careful and ENJOY your AV!

Folkestone Camera Club needs our help
From: "Folkestone Camera Club"
To: rtemlett
Date: Wed, 4 May 2011 14:41:40 +0100
Subject: From Folkestone Camera Club
I am writing to you as Chairman of Folkestone Camera Club down in Kent, with a strange request for help! Our Audio Visual group are involved in a project to commemorate the start of the First World War in 2014 and the role Folkestone played. To that end we are researching and collecting images to make short av's on several subjects, one of which is the journey of an Officer. The Officer we plan to use is Major Sydney Boddam-Whetham whose family lived in Folkestone at the time, and who has a surviving relative living in the Salisbury area. He is willing for us to make copies of photographs that he has in his possession and I wondered if any of your members would be interested in taking some photographs of them and sending them on to us. I am not sure if you have any A V enthusiasts in your club? The only person I have heard of from down your way is Leo Rich, who I know is in charge of Adjudications, but not sure if he is a member of your club. Do you think yo u could ask your members if it is of interest to any of them? Then let me know, then I could arrange a mutually convenient time for a meeting between them and Major Gen. Patrick Cordingley.
Thank you for reading this and I hope to hear from you soon.
Kind regards,
Melanie Chalk Chairman FCC

Are you interested in AV? Can you help the Southern Fed
Dear All,
Are you up to date with the moving news in AV circles, or are you interested in knowing more, the Council is aware that there is a growing interest in AV both within and surrounding the Federation,
if you are interested; we would like your help on the Council. Can you spare an evening every month during the club season? Would you like to get more involved, and find out more about photography above the camera club level? Or just to keep an ear to the ground and feedback to us on what is happening, and perhaps move the fed forward with the interest of AV.
The Southern Photographic Federation Council, needs more help, to serve both your club and other clubs in the area.
Many people and council members have given a lot of time this year and previously, you have a chance now to show your own gratitude, by sharing the workload.
As they say, many hands make light work, you can take on as much or as little as you would like to. However, we do need new members to join, if we are to continue with all our responsibilities, and the events we host. We ask only for your time and enthusiasm; the cost of your travel to meetings will be covered by the agreed SPF rate travel expenses; and there is always help and guidance on hand from more experienced council members.
Make this spring a time to change, step forward, and offer your help. Everyone is welcome, even if you would like to help with an event - but not join the council, please let us know.
There are several roles on the Council, where we are hoping that someone will come forward and shadow the current officer, so that they can share the knowledge, and workload.
We are definitely looking for someone who is prepared to take on the role of Treasurer, Roy Lambeth has done an excellent job, I am sure you will all agree, and he will remain on Council in another role, but he has left the role of treasurer in a wonderful position, and everything is clearly set out.
All positions on the Council (excluding past President) are open for nomination at the AGM on Tuesday 24th May 2011 in Littleton. If possible we would like to have nominations on or before the 3rd May, with a completed nomination form attached. All nominations received by this date will be put on the SPF website, and any positions that have more than one candidate will be balloted by the clubs attending the AGM, but all nominations received up to the moment of ballot at the AGM will not be rejected.
We really do need your support. Please contact a member of the Council if you would like to know more, there is a list of positions on the website, and you can find out more information about the council. http://www.southernfed.org.uk/contact.htm
We look forward to welcoming you onto the SPF Council.

Derek Bunyard: "Composition in Art and Photography"
Wednesday 27th April 2011 at Fordingbridge Camera Club
Derek’s talk will be on 27th April. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Winchester. A couple of years ago, Derek gave us a talk on the ‘History of Photographic Art’ and for a number of us, it was among the best presentations of recent years. Many of us wander into photography with little knowledge of its history and the great photographers of the past. Derek has a great depth of knowledge of both photography and art and on this occasion we have asked him to compare composition in both art forms. If you have artist friends, why not invite them along. It should be a fascinating evening.
Admission only £3.

SUMMER WALK 2011
MARTIN DOWN BUTTERFLY WALK
Monday July 4th 2011
We propose to visit Martin Down Nature Reserve, off the A354 Salisbury-Blandford road, for this year’s summer walk. We intend to meet at the Martin Down car park on the A354 at 6.00pm. The car park is on the left, about 1 mile after the end of the short dual carriageway, approx. 4 miles beyond Coombe Bissett, coming from the Salisbury direction.Martin Down has extensive walks and a variety of habitats and should offer good photographic possibilities, assuming the weather offers a pleasant summer evening. The Fox and Goose at Coombe Bissett offers the possibility of a drink and a chat on the return journey, unless anyone has a better alternative suggestion!
Richard Ramsay will be leading us.

From the SPF President to all Members
Dear All,
Can you spare an evening every month/six weeks during the club season? Would you like to get more involved, and find out more about photography above the camera club level?
The Southern Photographic Federation Council, needs more help, to serve both your club and other clubs in the area.
Many people and council members have given a lot of time this year and previously, you have a chance now to show your own gratitude, by sharing the workload.

Our thanks must go to Sue Watts (of Hayling Island), who has taken over the role of secretary early, whilst Chris has been unwell. Chris was planning on stepping down at the AGM, but not in such unforeseen circumstances. We should also not forget the loss of Les Lloyd, at the beginning of the season, having set up the new league format.
We really do need your support. Please contact a member of the Council if you would like to know more, there is a list of positions on the website, and you can find out more information about the council. http://www.southernfed.org.uk/ contact.htm

Please contact a member of the Council if you would like to know more, there is a list of positions on the website, and you can find out more information about the council. http://www.southernfed.org.uk/
We look forward to welcoming you onto the SPF Council.

NaturalFocus Photography Tutorial
I had so many people requesting that I inform them when my new NaturalFocus Interactive Photography Tutorial was available. I hope you don’t mind me contacting you in this rather intrusive way but I have not kept a list of specific people - hence this rather general email.
I am quite excited because over the past year I have been working on creating a very different type of DVD that teaches photography in a new and exciting way.
It is a computer program that, when popped into your computer, becomes a huge Interactive Photography Tutorial. So you don’t just listen, you read and interact - not like a book because you can go in any direction.
I am releasing it as a 13 part tutorial which arrives to you in the post each month. You will find full details and a FREE downloadable sample on my web site www.NaturalFocus.co.uk Please at least take a look at my web site.
Having taken a year to create the tutorial, I am very proud of the result and I hope that you find it not only informative but also inspirational and fun!
As you are part of my pre-launch, I would be very interested to hear your thoughts.
With best wishes
David Boag

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY BEGINNERS DAY - APRIL 15th 2011
I am writing to inform you that Colin Varndell is organising a day of presentations and lectures aimed at beginners to nature photography on April 15th 2011.
Last year he organised one such event in the New Forest which proved to be a great success. This event is being held at the Old Manor Hotel, near Bradford-on-Avon commencing at 10.00am.
The main theme of the day will be learning how to take great pictures of natural subjects such as plants, fungi, trees, insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds.
Emphasis will be on how to search for pictures, mainly based on natural history fieldcraft and how to approach subjects in the wild.
In addition there will be some technical content covering composition, lighting, exposure and some post production for each subject. Delegates will also be given Colin’s lecture notes and fact sheets for all of the subjects covered.
For more information e-mail info@colinvarndell.co.uk or visit http://www.colinvarndell.co.uk/
Thank you and best wishes

LCD Monitor Test
There is a very good on-line program to test your monitor screen. It can check its quality on many levels. You can also download a version onto a memory stick so that you can use the program to test monitors in shops.
Viewing angle is one of the tests and this is quite poor on many screens especially on laptop computers. So it is well worth while checking out.
The link is http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/
As you can see it is a Dutch program.
Here are some of the test links within the program.

Basingstoke Camera Club 2011 Annual International Projected Image Exhibition
Basingstoke Camera Club Annual International Projected Image Exhibition - Closing Date 7th March 2011
I thought you would like to know about the 2011 Basingstoke Camera Club Annual International Projected Image Exhibition. Photographers can enter up to five images in each of up to four entry classes: Open, Nature, Portrait and Monochrome. The Exhibition has been running for many years and is very successful, with about 1500 images entered last year. We accept only digital submissions and have a very easy to use online submissions website. There is, of course, no requirement for the images to have been taken with a digita l camera - scanned images would be just as welcome. Paypal may be used which means that the whole process can be carried out without resorting to paper entry forms or CDs!
The web site for the Exhibition is:
http://www.photoexhib.co.uk/
where entry forms, the rules and the online submission site may be found. All the accepted and award-winning images from the 2010 Exhibition are viewable too. The Club website is at:

Many thanks for your time. I very much hope to see some entries from your members

Powell Publishing Charity Christmas Cards - Christmas shots
A year ago we contacted Camera Clubs across the country in search of a 'Special Christmas card shot'. We had an excellent response from members, who sent in a variety of wonderful photos. Some were selected by our Art & Design Manager, Zara Pyke, to mock up and present to some of the major charities we work with.
One image was chosen by the Children's Hospice Association Scotland -a photo of a robin, sent in by Ann Collins of Wokingham & East Berkshire Camera Club whom we awarded £100 and £50 to her club.
This year we are looking for new photos to present to charities and would like to offer the same reward for any photos that are selected by a charity.
Popular categories include:-
Robins
Red Berries
Snow Scenes
Animals in snow (Cats, dogs, sheep, horses)
Postbox in snow

PAGB News No 39
Hi All
Welcome to the Issue 39 of e-news which is mainly concerned with an obituary for Don Morrison but has some important news for those who have sent entries to the 2011 GB Cups plus several notices of forthcoming events and an interesting article on judges manipulating Digital Images that they are judging in club competitions.
Issue 40 of e-news in February will be distributed via the "managed distribution" which I recently informed you of. Already we have transferred our database and, if you know of anyone who would like to subscribe, please direct them to www.pagbnews.co.uk/enewssubform.html I would like to assure you again of the confidentiality and security of this database. Your address will not be shared with any other business or person and we will only use it for e-news and related supplements, none of which you need download unless you are interested in the content.
We will be using HTML in future for future e-news, a simple document which will link you seamlessly to the current issue of e-news on a website. We will also list back issues and this means that those of you who load it to websites will probably have the option of loading a link instead of the entire e-news although we do not object if you prefer to do it that way.

BANNER/PAGE HEADER Can anyone design a banner for e-news that we can use on the website and probably as header for the newsletter? I know there are many creative readers out there and I'm sure we could make a design statement. The only rule is that it must incorporate the (rather old fashioned) PAGB logo and that our title, e-news, is written lower case just as I have used it.

Southern Federation Exhibition is coming
Dear Club Members,
Do not forget that the SPF Exhibition is to be hung tomorrow. The Federation is always grateful for help in doing this and as the local club we can do this more easily than most other clubs. This operation usually takes from 9.30am to 12 noon. Refreshments are provided for helpers. You will meet many members from other clubs too. So if you can spare some time it will help to get the exhibition hung that much quicker. This takes place on Thursday 6th Jan in the Library Galleries upstairs. Remember to sign yourself in at the enquiries desk before going upstairs. This is for fire regulations as at the club.
Then on Friday evening from 7.30pm the SPF hold the Preview when the Trophies will be presented. You are welcome to attend. Meet lots of people and the exhibition including the Projected Images. Drinks and nibbles available.
The exhibition is open to the public from Saturday 8th until 30th Jan. SPF site
Just to remind you our next club meeting is on Jan 10th when we will be showing the SPF Exhibition Projected Images.
AND we shall have a Teach-In trying to answer some of your photographic queries. To that end it is sensible to ask us the queries beforehand. Please can you send Richard by email any problem you may have in this regard. After our visit from Barry Senior recently you may like to revisit some of the techniques he revealed but you now cannot quite remember!

SPF Print League 2010/11 First Results
Here are the results from the first round that took place at Basingstoke on Thursday 11th November.
Do note that Sarah Shelley had our highest scoring print. Well done!
Also my image Heidi got the lowest mark. Previously it was chosen by Gavin Hoey, no less, for an RPS Ribbon. That is it was considered to be a super picture. That's judging for you.

Congratulations Richard
Well done to Richard Ramsay for being a runner up in the Salisbury Journal Photographic Competition.

Every Day it is an absolute tonic walking in Churchill Gardens, alongside the River Avon, in Salisbury. There is so much to see and do for every age group and animal lover and no two days are the same but today something was very different. Amongst the giant willows past the slide on the hill a a dark shape stood which was causing some alarm! Out of their 4 x 4's men leapt into action with sticks to try and contain the situation....walkers leashed their dogs and children were lifted to safety but the dark shape just turned to cast a glance at what the fuss was all about! After all there's nothing quite like chewing the cud in peace, musing about the Autumn colour, reflecting on life where the grass is greener - it's an absolute tonic for a cow in Churchill Gardens.
Just for everyone's amusement this is what I saw and photographed in Churchill Gardens this morning that appeared in the Salisbury Journal news today!

Friends of the Harnham Water Meadows Trust: Open events during winter and spring, 2011
The Friends of Harnham Water Meadows Trust is pleased to announce its programme of open events between January and May 2011. Children are always welcome, but for safety they should be supervised. No dogs please as the meadows are farmland.
Public demonstrations of ‘drowning’. Watermeadows are traditionally irrigated (‘drowned’) during the winter and early spring, this brings forward the ‘early bite’ of grass for livestock. The Harnham Water Meadows Trust is proud of its restoration programme that has been funded by the Friends, the former Salisbury District Council and the Environment Agency and assisted by many volunteers. We are now able to drown key areas, all accessible from Town Path.
The demonstrations are planned for:
Saturday 8th January
Saturday 29th January
Saturday 5th February and
Saturday 12th February
On each occasion, meet 10.00am at Rose Cottage, the programme takes about 1hr 30 min. Admission is free, there will be an invitation to make a donation to the Trust at the end, and light refreshments in the cottage from 11.30am. Natural circumstances may cause cancellation at short notice. Teachers are especially welcome, but there will be other opportunities to demonstrate drowning to school parties.
Demonstrations Saturday 26th February through to Saturday 12th March. Demonstrations may be arranged by appointment for schools and community groups. We invite a donation to the Trust, based on a minimum of £1 per pupil.
Spring Open Day Saturday 26th March. Come to Rose Cottage between 10.30am and 4.00pm. For the Friends this is the herald of spring. Admission is free, a sale of publications and light refreshments are available. Guided walks at 11.00am and 2.30pm (£2.50 for adults; under 16s free).
Family Environment Event Saturday 7th May. Rose Cottage is open between 2.00pm and 5.00pm (admission £1, under 16s free). There is a guided walk at 2.30pm (£2.50 for adults; under 16s free). We invite a range of local environmental organisations, there are events for children.
Summer open days and walks on the meadows. These were successful during 2010 and a programme will be announced later.
