ArtCare open exhibition

Final reminder that handing in takes place this Saturday 8 March (10am-12noon) and Monday 10 March (10am – 5pm) for ArtCare’s Open exhibition.

Information packs are available on our website http://www.artcare.salisbury.nhs.uk/exhibitions.htm

The ArtCare Open is always an exhibition with works of outstanding quality, selected fairly from a large number of entries.  The Open exhibition is a great way to showcase your work with nearly 4000 staff and tens-of-thousands of weekly visitors seeing work along the hospital corridors.   Remember too that all money raised from entry fees, as well as commissions on sales, supports the ArtCare project which is funded by charitable contributions.  The art service is widely appreciated by patients, staff and visitors alike and we very much hope that you will support our work again with a submission of your works.

Entries will be chosen for the final exhibition and an overall winner will receive a prize of £200 and an opportunity to exhibit later in the year. There will also be two runners-up prizes of £100 – these prizes have again been kindly sponsored by The League of Friends as they consider the Open exhibition an invaluable opportunity to bring colour and inspiration onto the corridors here at Salisbury District Hospital.

The selection process will take place on the evening of 12 March by a panel of judges from a variety of arts and healthcare backgrounds.   A presentation will take place on Friday 21 March at the Lecture Theatre Education Centre, Level 5, SDH North for all artists who have submitted works and invited guests.

We are able to exhibit approximately 120 works in total.   The Open is always a highlight in our exhibition calendar with good levels of interest and sales.

Concerned about parking?  Please note we have extra times and dates for handing in on Saturdays.  This is more convenient for artists who work during the week and it also avoids busier hospital times.  See the map attached that shows where you can temporarily pull up with your car.  Why not make the most of the day and combine your visit with a trip into Salisbury city!

Photography Studio Lighting Workshops

I'm contacting you to draw your attention to a number of photographic workshops I'm staging on the 19th and 20th February. The event is an opportunity to get hands-on experience with professional studio lighting, the use of soft-boxes, umbrellas and beauty dishes in a relaxed, friendly environment.

There will be at least two paid professional female models available at each session who will pose in a number of outfits from casual to glamorous to provide variety to the shoot. Different models will be available on each day for photographers who wish to attend on both days. Other models may attend on a 'time for prints' basis.

There are two sessions available each day: morning 9:30am - 1:00pm and afternoon 2:00pm - 5:30pm. Participants can chose morning, afternoon or all-day sessions.

The event will be held at The Centre for Science & Art, Lansdown, Stroud. Numbers are limited to just six photographers per session to allow each participant an opportunity to work individually with each model, therefore, advanced booking is essential.

The cost per session is £35 (£60 all day) and bookings can be made by e-mail to terry.allsopp@o2.co.uk . Please state which sessions you are interested in and include either an e-mail address or a contact phone number. No advance payment is required.

All lighting and seamless backdrops are provided together with refreshments. Participants will need to bring their own camera equipment and tripod (if required. )

Bookings are accepted on a 'first come first served basis' and group numbers will be strictly adhered to. I hope this may be of interest to some of your members.

If you require further information, please contact me on either (01453) 766111 mobile 07796 144 573 or e-mail terry.allsopp@o2.co.uk

Kind regards
Terry Allsopp

SCPF Visit to Guernsey

SCPF Visit to Guernsey

The Federation is planning a visit to Guernsey in April to meet up with fellow photographers on the island and to enjoy some island spring photography. This is proposed to be along the lines of a couple of previous visits, the last being in 2002.

On that visit the visiting photographers were taken to various locations around the island by our hosts during the day, and in the evenings the SPF photographers entertained the Guernsey members with displays and talks about their images , and held a friendly battle against the islanders.

It is proposed that we stay at the Peninsula Hotel at Grand Havre Bay on the North of the Island (http://www.peninsulahotelguernsey.com ), flying from Southampton on a Thursday morning and returning the following Sunday evening.

While no firm bookings have yet been made, the enquiries I have made suggest that the cost of the flights and half-board accommodation would be in the order of £620 per couple sharing twin / double accommodation.

The proposed dates are either 3rd to 6th April or 10th to 13th April ( Easter is 18th to 21st April) I would like to invite any of your members to partake in the visit. I would ask anyone interested to contact me by e-mail fairly promptly, so that we can go ahead and reserve the hotel accommodation before it gets booked up . Please advise which of the dates you would be able to make.

Make contact via HERE

I look forward to hearing from anyone interested.
John Hodge
President.

Market Photography

Salisbury Camera Club

As you know we arranged for Salisbury Camera Club to undertake a project covering life on the market. After some initial work they have decided it is better to do this after the refurbishment is complete and the new layout in place. So it is now proposed to undertake the project during March and April 2014.

This is extracted from the City councils newsletter to stall holders.

It’s a Fine Line by Jack Bates

It’s a Fine Line: A print talk
by
Jack Bates FRPS MPAGB

An opportunity to see and inspect up close quality prints in an original style of photography.
In his prints, Jack's personal style is seen in his original choice of subject and in the manner of its representation,
printed with a great attention to detail. His recent work includes larger panels, an example of which we hope to be able to show.
A kipper, the basis of Jack’s successful fellowship panel, hints at the wit and dry sense of humour that is one feature of his photography.

How to capture moving water.

Fall leaves, rushing water: A great combination if you know how to capture it. Four steps and some extra stuff about getting that "silky" water look.

Living with Environmental Change : LWEC Partnership

I am currently project managing a project on health and climate for an organisation called the Living With Environmental Change (LWEC) Partnership. This is an organisation of 22 public sector organisations that fund, carry out and use environmental research and observations.

For the project that I am managing, we have to produce something called a climate change report card, which is a 20-24 page document outlining the main impacts to health as a result of a changing climate. This document, available as a hard copy or off the internet, will be made available to all organisations and individuals who have an interest in health and climate change. It will probably be launched in the House of Commons in July, and as with previous report cards, may feature on that days television news.

As part of the production of this card, we need a number of high quality original photographs relating to the themes in the card that enhances the reading experience. For previous cards, which were on biodiversity and water, this was quite easy. These are available here if you want a look http://www.lwec.org.uk/resources/report-cards. However, for health, few suitable images exists, so we have decided to run a photography competition to see if we can uncover suitable images. This competition will have three prizes that can’t be money, but will have monetary values of £200, £100 and £50.

A crucial role in terms of running this competition is advertising the competition, and I was wondering if it would be possible to advertise this contest via your website, which I assume would probably be by direct contact with the different photographic societies, or any other way that you feel would be suitable. We have drafted the details of the competition for the LWEC website and the rules, and could forward these to you if you want (tweaking these slightly for a different media).
Thanks for your time in reading this email, and I look forward to your response
Best regards

An Invitation from Chichester Camera Club

Members of your Club are cordially invited to Chichester Camera Club’s thirteenth advanced members’ exhibition to be held on Saturday, 18th January 2014 at the North Mundham Village Hall. The exhibition will be open between 10 am and 5 pm with refreshments, light lunches and teas available throughout the day. If anyone cannot make it on the Saturday, we will be open on the following day (Sunday) between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. We will have soup and a roll, tea and coffee available on that day; however, access to the exhibitors may be limited.

Print exhibitors have had the choice of varying screen spaces with the freedom to display virtually any type of work they wish with no rules on size, subject matter technique, etc. whilst PDI workers are each allowed to have up to 6 images projected, again with no subject ruling. Based on our previous, similar exhibitions, this freedom of choice has resulted in a considerable display of artistic talent. The day has also proved to be a great social occasion.

This year we are pleased to announce that the North Mundham Village Hall has been expanded. This means that we will be able to accommodate more advanced workers and that our visitors will have more space in which to view the displays.

We hope you will be able to visit us and look forward to meeting you on the 18thJanuary. See our web site at

for directions.
