Security Advice – scam email alert

A warning has been issued regarding opening emails from unknown or unsolicited sources.

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) has identified scam emails claiming to be from the Royal Mail which are tricking victims into downloading CryptoLocker ‘ransomware’.

Two emails have been identified, they both claim that Royal Mail are holding an item for you at your local sorting office and that a response to the email is required to arrange for the item to be resent/collected.

According to the Royal Mail and NFIB the emails appear to be coming from:

RoyalMailParcelpacketinfo@championmailservice.com

or ‘yourparcel@championmail.com’

Once installed CryptoLocker works by encrypting the victim’s personal files such as, photos, music, office documents and then demands a payment.

Consideration should be given when opening emails.

Cath Carey CPAGB Hon Member

I am sad to have to tell you that Cath Carey died on Friday 23rd May 2015.
Cath was a long time member and one of our Honary Members.
Her funeral will take place on Monday 8th June 2105 at 12.15 at Salisbury Crematorium. There will be a wake afterwards at the Grasmere Hotel.
There will be a display of Cath's photography in the hotel.
If you plan on attending particularly the wake can you let Cath's daughter Janet Cox know please. Contact her on 01725 511 271.

It is worth looking at this Newsletter especially Graham Chubb. There is a photo there that reminds me of one Graham's photos. If you click on the photo it links to a lot more information. This link idea seems to work for most of the photos.

SCC country walk 27th June 2015

Good news Sally has agreed to allow camera club members to roam over her farm on Saturday the 27th June from 2pm until darkness.
If you have never been to her farm it is quite special having wide open landscape views across waving fields of tall grasses. Also dead cars buried in the undergrowth. Plus all the things you find on farms such as chickens and horses but now cows or sheep.
All we need is good weather and a camera.
Directions will be given later.

The Winchester National Exhibition is a new competition and exhibition for projected digital photographic images.

It is organised by Winchester Photographic Society and is affiliated to British Photographic Exhibitions (BPE), thereby allowing photographers to gain BPE Crowns for any acceptances.

Winchester National Exhibition is open to any photographer, amateur or professional, who is resident in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, or BFPO address. Entries, into any of four classes, can be submitted in May and June and the resulting exhibition will be held in September 2015.

It is free for all those who has helped with the unpacking days and just £3 for club members and£6 for anyone else who would like to come.

The ticket price includes a buffet, drinks and catalogue. It is a great social occasion with the chance to see some amazing images!

We also need some volunteers to help set up during the afternoon, so any helpers will be gratefully received from 2pm onwards.

Symposium on War Photography. 19th April 2015 at the Winchester Discovery Centre

For the past year the DVJ group of the RPS have been working towards an exhibition and symposium to commemorate the Great War. The Exhibition, Then and Now, is at the Discovery Centre in Winchester from 1-28th April.

The Symposium is at the Performance Space in the Discovery Centre on 19 April, starting at 11.00 hours.

We have a fine line up of speakers:

Dr Del Barrett ARPS. Metaphors we die by. An overview of the inextricable link between language as a means of persuasion and war. The use of language as a means of garnering support for war is far from new. In her presentation Del Barrett looks at the different techniques that have been used since WW1, including neologism euphemism and metaphor, and shows how such devices can have deadly effects on those in the war arena, including the war photographers.

Alison Baskerville. Women and Conflict. The portrayal of women as victims of war is something we see regularly on the news. But what happens when the woman chooses a uniform and takes on the more male dominated aspect of warfare? This talk will explore the idea of women and war and the images that represent them.

Dr RM Callender FRPS Photography in the Great War. The profusion of images that emerged to remind us of the conflict between 1914 and 1918 prompted Ron Callender to examine the role of photography in the Great War. His aim was to find out why photography was important to both the allies and the axes powers, and to gather examples of social and professional photography from both sides.

Brett Killington. The importance of documenting the remains of WWI. Brett has spent the last four years documenting the tunnels and other remains of WWI and he will discuss why they have historical value and the importance of documenting what remains for the future.

Dr. Hilary Roberts. Imperial War Museum Research Curator of Photography An Introduction to War Photography. War photography is a complex but frequently misunderstood genre which is almost as old as photography itself. This talk will consider the nature, origins and evolution of the key formative influences on photographers who take war as their subject .

“Members of your Club are cordially invited to Chichester Camera Club’s brand new and exciting Spring Exhibition on 11 and 12 April 2015, details of which can be found on the attached flyer.

Print exhibitors have had the choice of varying screen spaces with the freedom to display virtually any type of work they wish with no rules on size, subject matter technique, etc. whilst PDI workers are each allowed to have up to 6 images projected, again with no subject ruling. Based on our previous, similar exhibitions, this freedom of choice has resulted in a considerable display of artistic talent. The day has also proved to be a great social occasion.

Our web site has been archived by the British Library. They will preserve the site as it stands on the date they downloaded it [16th January 2015]. They will look again every 6 months or so. So as the site changes the old one will be preserved.
The British Library are doing this on request for any UK site.

Julian will be running through a typical workflow using selected images projected on a screen. Topics covered will include importing, organising, previewing, developing and output. Whilst it will not be possible to cover every feature there will be topics to interest both beginners and existing users.

Julian is a photography enthusiast, an Adobe certified expert and runs Lightroom workshops. He has been using Lightroom for many years at work & home and regards it as an essential photographers tool.

This year we are wanting to invite all SCPF club members, so that you can all see some of the fantastic work that is entered in to our annual international competition.

Entry is ** FREE ** and refreshments are available at a small charge during the regular judges breaks.

Last year attracted over 10,000 entries from 66 countries around the world so this year has a lot to live up to.

As usual, it is our intention to award in excess of 25 awards in each class. At the discretion of the judges, these will include a FIAP gold medal, 4 other FIAP, PSA or RPS medals, 6 Southampton Camera Club medals, as well as number of FIAP or PSA ribbons and Southampton CC certificates of merit. The entrant with the highest overall acceptance total will win the FIAP Blue Badge for Best Author.

Romanian Revolution Talk 16th Feb at Southampton CC's venue

LECTURE: - Romanian Revolution 1994

Dr Paul Lowe is an award-winning photographer and educator, who has covered breaking news the world over, working in 82 countries over the last 25 years. Paul is the Course Director of the prestigious Masters Programme in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. He is a consultant to the World Press Photo foundation in Amsterdam on online education of professional photojournalists in the majority world. His book, Bosnians, documenting 10 years of the war and post war situation in Bosnia, was published in April 2005 by Saqi books, and he has just published a new book. The Siege of Sarajevo. His PhD thesis explored the role of bearing witness and photography in the Balkan conflict. Paul will talk about various stories he has covered in his career, and about making the transition from working photographer to educator.

Paul will be running a photographic tuition week aboard Hummingbird, a round the world Clipper 60, whilst they cruise from Kiel to Rugen on the north German coast in mid-April this year. They will be visiting the UNESCO city of Lubeck amongst others. The skipper, Rachael Sprot, will be on hand to talk to any would-be sailors about the boat and the trip. Some SCC members had a great trip with them last year in the islands of Orkney.

PAGB Inter Fed Competition

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ALLIANCE of GREAT BRITAIN

ANNUAL INTER–FEDERATION PRINT & PDI COMPETITIONS AND EXHIBITIONS

The annual PAGB Inter Fed Competition and subsequent exhibition will take place in June of this year.

The majority of work for the SCPF entry will again be selected from the forthcoming Club Championships and Finals Day entries.

Images will be selected to represent the SCPF in the following categories
· Colour Prints
· Mono Prints
· Open PDI
· Nature PDI

The selection submissions shows much of the good work from our Club's members, but we know that there are many more excellent images (particularly prints and especially in mono) that never get the chance of consideration as the selection committee never see them.

We would really like to see representative work from as many clubs as possible and would ask that prints be submitted to any SCPF Council member before May 10th 2015. This is also the date of the SCPF AGM and Club finals day, when a box will be available for work to be submitted.

Please bring this to the attention of Club Members. It is important to note that any member can submit work for selection, it is not necessary for clubs to pre-select.

PDI's can be sent to me at any time for inclusion at pagb.competition@southerncountiespf.org.uk, although thanks to the existing PDI databases there is not such a shortage of suitable work for consideration.

part of the prize being a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ 1000 (it was originally to have been an FZ 72 as indicated on the page above, but Panasonic upgraded it). 

As I already own a DSLR system, it is surplus to my requirements. It is a UK model in an unopened box, sourced from Panasonic eu in Bracknell. If any of your members are interested in purchasing it, I am asking £550 ovno. I can deliver anywhere in the Salisbury area, or a prospective purchaser can collect it from my home in Salisbury.

You will enjoy a lot of practical demonstrations. Jeff will demonstrate the options for automatic control of the camera with a smart phone and tablet and examine the available apps and interfaces like CamRanger, Triggertrap, Weye Feye and Promote Control that allow automatic shooting and by breaking a beam or sound triggering, time-lapse, star trails, bulb exposures and HDR sequences.

It is about how Jeff sets about to shoot his images and covers his equipment selection and its use in the field. The program starts with the tools he uses for doing the research before a shoot, continues on with the equipment and settings used during the shoot, and finishes with some processing suggestions and demonstrations.
